Wine exports grow, much of them from Modesto area. Which countries bought the most?

in Economy/Food & Drinks

Wine exports from the United States jumped 10.6% in value in 2021, reversing a four-year decline, an industry group said Monday.

The total reached $1.44 billion despite tariffs, COVID-19 and other challenges, the Wine Institute reported.

The San Francisco-based group represents California wineries, which account for about 95% of U.S. exports. Much of the volume comes from the Modesto area.

The value hit a record high of $1.61 billion in 2016, then dropped each year to $1.29 billion by 2020.

Export volume has dropped over the past decade amid a general rise in value, reaching 89.4 million gallons in 2021. This reflects a shift toward higher-priced bottles from Napa and other premium regions.

These Are The Only States Where Dunkin’ Fans Can Try Its New Add-Ins

in Food & Drinks

From its salted caramel cold foam to mocha swirl, Dunkin' has a handful of customization options for those who simply don't want to order their coffee straight off the menu. But just when you think Dunkin' can't offer more — they do. The chain has released three add-ins: Antioxidant, Prebiotic, and Extra Charged (via Elite Daily). And these liquid "Boosters" add exactly the benefit they are each named for.

The Antioxidant and Prebiotic add-ins are definitely more health-oriented, with the Antioxidant providing customers with Vitamin E and zinc, and the Prebiotic aiding in digestion, thanks to it containing soluble fiber. And though Dunkin' has had beverages in the past that have extra caffeine (cue the Extra Charged Coffee and the Energy Cold Brew), just a pump of the Extra Charged Booster in a drink will give it a 20% extra boost.

‘A double-edged sword’: Delivery apps helped Modesto restaurants survive the pandemic

in Food/Food & Drinks

After navigating the closings, openings, supply shortages and staffing issues of the COVID-19 pandemic, local restaurants and retailers are emerging with a changed relationship with their customers.

Part of that change, particularly for restaurants, has been the rise of third party delivery apps. In the Central Valley, restaurants and grocers embraced the convenience of no-contact takeout and delivery option services like DoorDash, Grubhub and Uber Eats.

New data from the University of California, Riverside shows that app-based delivery services greatly boosted Central Valley restaurants, grocers and merchants across the region.

Health insurance can now help some Californians find housing

in Health/Housing

Thanks to an experimental new program aimed at easing the state’s profound homelessness crisis, some Californians now can get housing help from an unlikely source: their health insurance plans.

With the launch this year of CalAIM, California is reimagining medical coverage by marrying healthcare and housing statewide for the first time. Under the new approach, certain high-risk and low-income Medi-Cal recipients can use their insurance plans for more than doctor’s visits and hospital stays — they can get help finding affordable or subsidized housing, cash for housing deposits, help preventing an eviction and more.

Proponents say the program acknowledges what doctors and social workers have known for years — it’s incredibly difficult to keep people healthy if they’re living on the streets or at risk of losing their home.

Adopting low-carbon energy can reduce racial disparities in air pollution

in Environment

Switching to low carbon fuels for transportation, cooking, heating, power generation and other needs would help fight climate change and also reduce racial and ethnic disparities in exposure to air pollution, according to researchers at the University of California, Davis.

Research published in the journal Science of the Total Environment found that differences in exposure to fine and ultrafine particle pollution could be reduced between 20 and 40% in 2050 if solar, wind and electric sources were used rather than fossil fuels.
