The California Chefs Showcasing the Diversity of Native American Cuisine

in Food/Food & Drinks

BISON MEATBALLS BATHED IN BLUEBERRY sauce. Roasted fiddlehead ferns. Acorn crêpes topped with maple cream. These are just a few examples of what Indigenous chefs are serving at restaurants across California. Three spots in particular are dedicated to championing Native foods and culture in the state. Their chefs cite the same formative experience: growing up wondering why every other culture had a restaurant featuring its cuisine, but seeing none that reflected their own Native foodways.

Cafe Ohlone, the first Indigenous restaurant in California, opened in 2018 on the back patio of a Berkeley bookstore. Founders Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino rooted their restaurant in the cuisine and traditions of their Ohlone people and their ancestral homeland of Northern California. But despite accolades for their meals of locally gathered ingredients, the pandemic forced the closure of their cozy pop-up spot in 2020.

Incredible Video Shows Salamanders Hold ‘Skydiving’ Pose in Free Fall

in Animals

Aneides vagrans, also called the wandering salamander, is an elusive critter. Its natural habitat is the canopy of California's redwood trees, the world's tallest trees, making it tough to observe.

One thing we do know about this salamander is that when disturbed it will willingly jump from tree branches, assuming a posture similar to that taken by skydivers, as can be seen below.

"It was confusing to see these salamanders jump so readily given the height of the trees they inhabit," said Christian Brown, a PhD Candidate of the University of South Florida and an author of the study.

The University of California is vowing to offer its California undergraduates a debt-free college experience by 2030 as part of an overhaul of how the system views college affordability.

To get there, the system of 230,000 students seeking bachelor’s degrees is relying on a mix of state and federal support, revenues from recent tuition increases, and students working part-time to cover the full cost of an education.
