Staffing and funding. Business owners share those and other top concerns at Turlock summit

Small business owners gathered Tuesday for the first Turlock Business Summit, organized by the Valley Sierra Small Business Development Center.

The free event, held at the Grand Oak Banquet Hall And Event Center in Turlock, saw over 100 small business owners and employees in attendance and featured presentations from various consultants and business leaders.

Maisie Silva, the Turlock program specialist for the Valley Sierra SBDC, said the event was made possible through an American Rescue Plan Act grant for the “Turlock: Small Business, Large Impact” program. The program seeks to connect local business owners with resources and provide opportunities and training.

These are just a few examples of what Indigenous chefs are serving at restaurants across California. Three spots in particular are dedicated to championing Native foods and culture in the state. Their chefs cite the same formative experience: growing up wondering why every other culture had a restaurant featuring its cuisine, but seeing none that reflected their own Native foodways.

Cafe Ohlone, the first Indigenous restaurant in California, opened in 2018 on the back patio of a Berkeley bookstore. Founders Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino rooted their restaurant in the cuisine and traditions of their Ohlone people and their ancestral homeland of Northern California. But despite accolades for their meals of locally gathered ingredients, the pandemic forced the closure of their cozy pop-up spot in 2020.

"It was confusing to see these salamanders jump so readily given the height of the trees they inhabit," said Christian Brown, a PhD Candidate of the University of South Florida and an author of the study.

The 2,500-acre property, which was once home to dairy pastures and almond orchards, will be California’s 280th state park — and the first new state park to open since Fort Ord Dunes near Monterey in 2009, according to The Modesto Bee. Gavin Newsom, California’s governor, announced last week that he is allocating $5 million for the new park as part of his state budget proposal.

Uber Will Now Deliver Orders From Over 70 Grocery Outlet Stores

Uber continues its push into on-demand and scheduled grocery delivery. Starting Thursday, West Coast customers can use Uber and Uber Eats to order sundries from more than 70 Grocery Outlet locations in California, Oregon and Washington state.

The goal of the pilot partnership "is to provide a reliable and affordable grocery delivery option that works for everyone, no matter your budget," said Oskar Hjertonsson, Uber's head of grocery, in a statement.
