Sonoma County Bars, Indoor Dining and Museums Ordered to Close Monday

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

State public health officials on Sunday ordered Sonoma County bars without food service to close and put a halt to indoor dining service as well as visits to museums and entertainment centers, marking the latest and most significant regression for the county into pandemic prohibitions with the coronavirus resurgent in the community and deepening its toll on livelihoods.

The highly anticipated health order from the state Department of Public Health goes into effect at 12:01 a.m. Monday and adds Sonoma County to a list of at least 29 other California counties facing reinstated restrictions driven by a wave of summertime coronavirus infections and hospitalizations.

The number of known cases in the county reached 1,819 Sunday night, a tally that has increased sharply since Memorial Day and contributed to the state’s decision to add Sonoma County to the growing list of counties being ordered to dial back indoor business activity.

‘We’re Getting Destroyed’: San Diego Restaurants and Bars React to a Looming Shutdown

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

As Mike Georgopoulos was prepping this week to finally open his swanky $10-million steakhouse in the Gaslamp Quarter, he stared down from his perch on the mezzanine with a mixture of delight — and dread. The floor-to-ceiling wine display and marble bar top were dazzling, and the wait staff, nattily attired in black pants, pressed white shirts, gray vests and green ties, meticulously polished the glassware for the Friday opening.

But why bother opening at all, he wondered.

Just hours earlier, county officials had warned of the looming threat this week of a ban on all indoor dining and drinking, which 19 California counties, including Los Angeles and Orange, have already been ordered to implement for the next three weeks. With an alarming surge in coronavirus cases, San Diego could be next, the county said.

San Diego County Shuts Down Bars, Breweries Again

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

San Diego County ordered all bars, wineries and breweries that do not serve food to close by the end of the month, officials announced Monday.

“We will be closing all bars, wineries and breweries in San Diego County that do not have a license to serve food,” Supervisor Nathan Fletcher said.

The order goes into effect at midnight on July 1, Fletcher said. All additional reopenings will be paused until at least August 1, when county officials will reevaluate guidance for San Diego.

“It’s a simple reality that alcohol consumption impairs judgment and may lead to less compliance with physical distancing guidelines. People often spend more time in a bar than other establishments, like a restaurant for eating. Loud bars and loud settings require loud conversations and yelling which spreads droplets more efficiently and more effectively than you would see in other settings. And then people who do not know each other often congregate in bars, making it difficult to engage in throughout contact tracing about who may have been exposed,” Fletcher said.

Dine-in Restaurants, Retail Cleared to Reopen in Stanislaus County

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. — Modesto, Turlock, and the rest of Stanislaus County have gotten the green light to reopen their dine-in and retail options.

Stanislaus County Supervisor Kristin Olsen announced Wednesday that the county’s attestation was approved by the state. The move means dine-in restaurants and retail businesses like shopping centers are clear to return in the county, with some modifications.

The order moves them further into the Expanded Phase 2 of reopening.

“Our goal is to open Stanislaus County in a way that minimizes the risk for COVID-19 transmission, and we have a business community that is committed to reopening safely and responsibly to ensure our residents remain healthy and safe,” said Dr. Julie Vaishampayan, Stanislaus County Health Officer. “I have faith that members of our community will do their part in preventing the spread of the coronavirus, because that is what it is going to take for all of us to succeed including washing hands frequently, staying home when sick, and wearing a face covering”.

Why the World’s Greatest String Cheese Might Be in Turlock, CA

in Food & Drink

TURLOCK, Calif. — While known as the former home of Colin Kaepernick and a magnet for food processors like Blue Diamond and Foster Farms, Turlock might be able to comfortably add one more notch to its belt: home of the world’s greatest string cheese.

While many cheeses tout themselves as the best, Karoun Dairies might actually have enough awards to back it up.

It’s claimed more than 170 national and international cheese awards, and recently steamrolled the competition at the World Championship Cheese Contest in the flavored string cheese category, an award they had never won before.

Keto-Friendly Vegetables

in Food & Drink

Cauliflower

Like broccoli, cauliflower is versatile and contains plenty of vitamins and minerals, says Stephanie Laska, co-author of “THE DIRTY, LAZY, KETO Cookbook.” She’s based in Turlock, California.

“It’s an inexpensive, versatile vegetable that can take on the flavor of a dish it’s part of or stand tall on its own,” Laska says.

There are a number of ways to prepare and serve cauliflower, including:

— Raw.

— Mashed.

— Roasted.

— Riced.

“One of my favorite ways to prepare cauliflower is also one of the easiest,” Laska says. Toss cauliflower florets with melted, unsalted butter, olive oil and salt and pepper onto a pan and roast for 25 to 30 minutes at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Pull the florets out of the oven and dust them with Parmesan cheese and parsley flakes, then roast for another 5 minutes to melt the cheese.

Virus Impacts Food Processing Procedures

in Food & Drink

As the spread of the coronavirus forces closures of major meat processing facilities around the country, concerns about worker safety and the nation’s meat supply have the industry doubling down on precautions.

On Monday, JBS — the U.S. subsidiary of the world’s largest processor of fresh beef and pork — announced it would be indefinitely closing its pork production plant in Worthington, Minnesota. The facility is the third JBS plant to suspend operations following a surge in coronavirus cases, following the closure of their beef facility in Colorado last week and another in Pennsylvania, which has since reopened.

Additionally, other major meat processors including Tyson Foods have fallen victim to the coronavirus. Tyson’s pork processing plant in Iowa is partially reopening this week after an outbreak of its own, which resulted in two employee deaths and 148 positive cases of the virus. Others throughout the country remain closed.
