Plans for Second Dutch Bros Spark Ire from Neighboring Cafe

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

Dutch Bros Coffee is hoping to open a second Turlock location after submitting plans to the City last month, but not everyone in town is excited.

Turlock’s first Dutch Bros location opened last September across the street from Stanislaus State and has been busy ever since. Now, the company is looking to add to its Turlock success with a double drive-through location in the Turlock Town Center. When Mundo’s Latin Grill eventually moves to another space within the shopping center, Dutch Bros hopes to take over the restaurant’s building and cater to even more coffee connoisseurs.

For the family-owned coffee shop Alison’s Cafe House, located just down the road at 219 W. Canal Dr., the news was like déjà vu. Last October, the small business spearheaded an online petition after they realized a Starbucks would be built across the street from them and worried about going out of business. Although the petition to stop the Starbucks’ construction received over 2,500 signatures, the effort came well after the City’s deadline to appeal the project.

Now, Emita Paris of Alison’s Cafe House is wondering if the coffee shop will be able to survive twice the competition. Since the first Dutch Bros location opened, she said her family’s business has lost half of its revenue despite the competition being located across town.

Damage from Kitchen Fire Temporarily Closes Beloved Turlock Restaurant

in Food & Drink

TURLOCK (CBS13) — A beloved Turlock restaurant was damaged in a kitchen fire over the weekend.

Turlock City Fire crews responded to Latif’s By Pedretti late Sunday afternoon for a reported fire and found smoke coming from the HVAC units and vents on the roof. Firefighters also saw smoke down the floor level of the two-story restaurant.

Firefighters quickly went on the offensive and several other agencies soon responded to help.

It appears the fire started on a commercial cooktop in the kitchen of the restaurant. Thankfully, the automatic fire extinguishing system in the hood had been set off, somewhat containing the fire.

Still, firefighters say appliances on the wall and ceiling area around the stove were damaged. Further, smoke permeated through much of the building – requiring the use of high-powered fans to get it out.

Oakland’s First Standalone Puerto Rican Restaurant Is Ready to Roll Out the Mofongos

in Food & Drink

For nearly three years, La Perla has been one of the great hidden treasures of Oakland’s Dimond District: a bustling, wildly delicious-smelling Puerto Rican takeout spot tucked inside the Two Star Market liquor store on MacArthur Boulevard. Now, the business is ready to take its next step: Cheo and Gabriel Ortiz, the father-and-son team behind La Perla, are moving the family business to a new location — just around the block at 3409 Fruitvale Avenue — that’s about four times as big.

It’s likely to be a destination restaurant from day one, simply because of the sheer paucity of Puerto Rican food options in the Bay Area. In the East Bay, in particular, La Perla will be the first full-fledged Puerto Rican restaurant — a standalone spot where customers will be able to feast on arroz con gandules, shrimp mofongos, and slow-roasted pernil.

Downtown Riverbank Coffee Shop Shows Progress

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

What does one do when COVID restrictions have your primary interest virtually locked down? Well, if you’re Riverbank High School head varsity football coach, you can open a coffee shop in downtown Riverbank.

That’s just what Coach Anthony Buich is working on, a shop called Coffee Bruin, to be opened on Santa Fe Street, between Third and Fourth streets. It’ll be at 3310 Santa Fe, right next to Get Toasted, and across the street from Pizza Plus.

Buich said he’s hoping to finish up, get inspections passed, and open by the end of February.

In the meantime, he’s been working at the shop, where the new coffee bar is beginning to take shape. This past week, he was working on stripping down the concrete floor, getting it ready to refinish.

There’ll be several stations at the bar, featuring coffee brewing styles like latte, cappuccino and espresso.

Since last May, Buich and his wife Tayler have been filling orders for coffee, taken via their Facebook page, for raw coffee beans, either plain or ground before delivery. And they’ve been able to serve an area from Turlock to Oakdale, delivering the orders themselves.

New Domino’s Pizza Indicative of Turlocker’s Success

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

Turlock resident Greg DeGrandis recently opened his second Turlock Domino’s Pizza location, further fulfilling a dream that began at age 18 when he first took a job making pizza and answering delivery calls.

DeGrandis started his journey with Domino’s Pizza as a part-time employee, but it wasn’t until he realized he could one day own and operate a restaurant of his own that he began to look at his job as a potential career choice. When he moved his family to Turlock years later in 2009 to manage the city’s only Domino’s location on Geer Road, he took the first step toward achieving that goal.

In 2011, DeGrandis became the franchisee of Turlock’s first Domino’s restaurant and today owns 12 locations with more on the way. One of his most recent developments is a Domino’s Pizza location on Monte Vista Avenue which opened next to Stanislaus State and Dutch Bros Coffee last month.

Stanislaus Union School District Continues to Provide Free Meals to Families in Need Amid Pandemic

in Education/Food & Drink

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. (KTXL) — A small school district in Stanislaus County is serving up nourishment to hundreds of families, thanks in part to state funding, and in large part, due to the dedicated staff of the Stanislaus Union School District.

Since the beginning of March, the district has been able to provide free meals to Modesto kids and their families.

In goes some orange juice, throw in some cheese and an apple: both tireless work thanks to essential workers and a recipe that will help families in need.

“When they offered that to where they would deliver it here at our door, it really lightened the load,” said Bob Cole, who is legally blind.

New Program to Provide Meals, Check-Ins for Area Seniors

in Food & Drink

A program providing free meals and daily check-in calls to some of the most at-risk and isolated residents of Stanislaus County and northern Merced County is now open to the public.

Seniors are facing the most severe risks and complications from the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of stay-at-home recommendations, many have limited interaction with their neighbors and families and often can’t get groceries on their own.

In response, Legacy Health Endowment and Covenant Care Home and Hospice partnered to pilot a Meals on Wheels and Well Check Calls program. The program is now open to other needy seniors in the area.

This program provides free meals Monday through Friday and a daily wellness phone call. If a senior cannot be reached, or is having an emergency, Covenant Care staff is prepared to step in to get them the help they need. Meals are prepared by the United Samaritan’s Foundation, which has a long history of providing fresh and balanced meals for hundreds of seniors each week through their existing senior feeding programs.

Sacramento County Restaurants Forced to Close Indoor Operations Again: ‘I’m Devastated’

in Food & Drink/Business & Economy

SACRAMENTO, CA (KOVR) — Sacramento and Stanislaus counties are back to square one. Both counties in the purple tier again, which means no more indoor operations.

This will be shut down number three for some midtown Sacramento restaurants, and this time, it’s happening when the temperatures are dropping. Some owners say it’s nearly impossible to operate solely outside.

“I know we’ll see more of our friends lose businesses, but I’m not sure how we’ll survive,” said Ray Ballestro, Owner at Allaro.
