Wish Book: Santa Cruz farm provides jobs to the homeless, food for the community

Brenda Deckman had lots of jobs in her life. Nurse’s aide. Manager of a Subway sandwich shop. Home health care aide. Laundromat worker.

But after a turbulent marriage that ended with her losing custody of her 5-year-old son, she fell into a deep depression, spiraled downward and ended up homeless, living in a tent in the Pogonip Open Space Preserve, a 640-acre wooded park on the northern edge of Santa Cruz.

She had no car. No bike. Not even one photo of her son. Adrift, aimless and lacking self-worth, she survived on food stamps, panhandled and bathed in a creek.

PARADE RETURNS DOWNTOWN

The Turlock Downtown Christmas Parade returned to Main Street on Friday night with scenes from “Christmas in Toyland,” the parade theme for the night. After being cancelled last year due to COVID, hundreds lined Turlock’s downtown streets to take in the spectacle of lights, with appearances from Santa Claus, the Grinch and even a dancing horse or two.

Turlock non-profits to benefit from county COVID aid

Several Turlock charities which have suffered monetarily throughout the pandemic are set to receive tens of thousands of dollars in relief funding through Stanislaus County’s Non-Profit Support Grant Program. 

The program was approved by the Board of supervisors late last year and first doled out $2.4 million to non-profits providing services for youth or community-centered arts and culture. In August of this year, Supervisors approved an additional $1 million for the program in light of an ongoing, widespread need, and Turlock charities like the Salvation Army, United Samaritans Foundation, Aspiranet and Haven’s Women Center of Stanislaus were included in the second round of funding.

Stanislaus State launches fundraiser for library

A dedicated group of Stanislaus State alumni, community leaders and supporters have come together to launch a fundraising campaign in support of the newly renovated J. Burton Vasché Library.

Turlock residents John and Jeani Ferrari and Stan State alumna Marlene Stante are co-chairing the fundraising initiative, which is called “The Next Chapter.” The fundraising campaign, which officially launched on National Philanthropy Day, continues through May 1, 2022.

Turlock High student looks to give back during the cold months

Nihal Gill, a junior at Turlock High, and was inspired to give back to those in need one day when he was on his way to school and saw a man outside in need of a coat.

“My mind started to think about how many people were probably trying to survive through these winter months without a coat. I wanted to do something to help people stay warm during the dead, cold winters,” said Gill.

TUSD reviewing emergency protocols after violent incident

Turlock Unified School District is currently working with an outside firm to review and update its district-wide emergency operations plan. After an incident involving a stabbing between two students, which Superintendent Dana Trevethan called “the recent unprecedented violence at Turlock High School,” TUSD wants the community to know they have protocols in place to keep students safe and are constantly reviewing to make sure they are effective.

Some of the safety measures that have already been instituted since the passage of bond Measures N and O include adding perimeter fences to control entry onto campuses; visitors must pass through the front office of each campus, and be approved before entering a campus.  They have also installed security cameras to investigate and understand when issues develop.

Turlock Nerf Group Looks to Combine Fitness and Hobby in Local Community

A local group formed on Facebook has given community members an opportunity to discover a new way to have fun while exercising with friends.

Turlock Nerf Group organizes monthly events consisting of multiple games involving foam blasters with the goal of promoting a fun reason to get out of the house, interact with other individuals in a safe environment, and exercising in a way that feels more like a game instead of a chore.

Group creator and blaster enthusiast Wally White oversees the growing group while also organizing the free to attend events.

Turlock Together seeks community support

Turlock Together, in partnership with the Salvation Army, is hosting their annual Christmas Food Boxes program to help local families at the holidays.

The program is running now till Dec. 12. Individuals who would like to sign up are welcome to come to 893 Lander Ave between 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

NO TRICKS, JUST TREATS

Ghouls, goblins and a princess or two traveled from business to business on Main Street this past Saturday as the annual Downtown Trick-Or-Treat event took place. The collaboration between over 40 downtown businesses allowed kids like Johanna the ghost to collect candy while Charlie and Beatrice, a pair of cow wranglers, had passers-by stopping in their tracks to say, “Aw!” as they shopped at the Turlock Certified Farmers Market.

Unemployment continues to fall in Stanislaus

The unemployment rate continued to drop in Stanislaus County, according to the latest numbers from the Employment Development Department.

Stanislaus County had an unemployment rate of 6.9 percent in September, down from a revised rate of 8 percent in August. The rate is below the year-ago estimate of 10.3 percent.
