Business owner arrested in food truck scam investigation in Stanislaus County

An investigation into an alleged food truck construction business ends with the owner behind bars, and at least 28 victims losing nearly $1 million in cash.

Investigators tell me it took them close to a year to build this case against 28-year-old Fernando Ochoa, the suspect who allegedly scammed over two dozen people.

Investigators say they wouldn't put this case in front of a judge unless they felt certain about it.

Grant helps Turlock Nursery School get spiffed up

Turlock Nursery School, the oldest such school in Turlock dating back to 1972, is getting a new look.

Turlock Nursery School received an $80,000 grant from the Marin Community Foundation and is using the funds for a new roof; fresh exterior paint; energy-efficient lighting and fans; play-structure repairs and upgrades; tree removal and replacement; and new sidewalks for improved accessibility and safety.

Another 4,000 marijuana plants seized in Stanislaus County

Nearly two weeks after law enforcement busted thousands of marijuana plants and guns in several Stanislaus County homes, another illegal grow operation was discovered.

On Wednesday, Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department said it acted on a search warrant at a residence on the 1100 block of North Carpenter Road in Modesto. During the search, “a large illegal marijuana grow was in operation and 4,000 plants were seized.”

New California festival to bring tamales, margaritas — and a job fair — to Stanislaus County

Who doesn’t love a good tamale, or making money? Stanislaus County residents can get their fair share of the Mesoamerican treat at the inaugural California Tamale Festival in the fall — and maybe even get a job in the process.

Riverbank resident Armando Duldulao is putting on the event, which will take place Oct. 15 between noon and 7 p.m. at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock. Aside from a host of activities and entertainment (and plenty of shopping), visitors can attend a job fair that will be held during the event.

Modesto church suspends proposal to house homeless families. Here’s why

In the face of strong opposition from neighbors, the Modesto Church of the Brethren has suspended its offer to the city to be considered as a site for tiny homes as temporary housing for homeless families.

A city official said as of last week the church was one of just three organizations that had submitted a proposal since November when the city asked for potential sites for tiny homes.

Two people were arrested on multiple charges Monday following a search of a residence in Turlock, the Turlock Police Department said.

According to police, the Turlock Police Special Investigations Unit assisted in a search of a home on Davis Street.

Our solar system will treat people to an eclipse of the sun next week, and local organizations will treat those in Stanislaus County to special viewing locations.

The Modesto Children’s Museum, along with Sutter Health, has set up designated viewing sites across the region for the Monday, April 8, eclipse. There also will be activities for all ages.

Modesto home converted to pot grow house catches fire

 A Modesto home that had been converted into an illegal marijuana grow house caught fire early Saturday morning.

Modesto Fire crews responded to the scene near Prescott Road and Bangs Avenue and found flames shooting from the attic and roof of the home.
