Why is Modesto councilman advocating downtown as home for roller skating rink?

Modesto Councilman Chris Ricci says he has an easy and relatively inexpensive way to draw more people downtown: The city could make it the home of a permanent outdoor roller skating rink.

He said the city could consider converting part of the parking lot at Modesto Centre Plaza for the rink. Part of the parking lot at the Modesto Library or other downtown parking lots also could be contenders, Ricci said.

“Skating creates community, and it’s a spectator sport,” the councilman said. “Ideally, it would be similar to the ice skating rink” that operates seasonally in the Centre Plaza parking lot and draws thousands to downtown over the holidays.

A FRUIT TREE, around February, has a knack for stopping any flower fan in their beauty-seeking tracks. After all, a person wants to pause and admire this painting-perfect sight, which includes barky limbs bursting with frilly pink blossoms (and when we say "pink," we mean just about every shade of pink a person can imagine). Where, though, can you go to see a profusion of pink-a-tude, and several trees, or even rows of trees, in full-on February splendor? Venturing to where such specimens are cultivated is one primo idea, a place like Modesto. So many Central Valley farms are at their showy best during the second month, so much so that Visit Modesto created a map for those visitors and locals eager to take an Almond Blossom Cruise.

‘A community effort’: Turlock teens start Kitchens for Change to help tackle food insecurity

TURLOCK, Calif. (KTXL) — Some Turlock teens have been inspired by World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit that responds to national disasters to feed those in need, to tackle food insecurity locally.

Food is cooked, assembled and packaged to-go by Kitchens for Change.

“It’s just been incredible. So many kids are willing and able to come out and help and have fun doing it,” said Elias Rabine, the president and founder of Kitchens for Change.

The high school club is getting hands-on experience, serving their community.

The Turlock Unified School District board approved a map Tuesday night that changes the geographic areas each trustee represents to reflect updated population numbers.

The redistricting process is required every 10 years to coincide with the U.S. census. The goal is to create areas with roughly equal populations and to fairly represent groups of voters.

Turlock school officials considered three maps publicly over three months and received feedback from trustees and community members.

Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors Chairman Terry Withrow said he didn’t expect everyone would agree with the county’s response and strategies for dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years.

But the county is ready to move beyond the public health crisis, regardless of what COVID might still throw at the community.

“Life is to be lived, not just survived,” Withrow said in his State of the County speech delivered Tuesday evening in the meeting chambers at Tenth Street Place.

Residential development rules 2021, will carry into 2022

Turlock saw plenty of new development in 2021, from new coffee shops to additional housing. As the City’s Planning Division looks ahead to 2022, construction set to take place in the new year will provide a boost to the economy through more people and goods.

The community kicked off this year by welcoming a new building in the Turlock Town Center, which currently houses Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Impact Nutrition. Dutch Bros Coffee constructed and opened its second Turlock location in the center this year as well. Just across the roadway on the corner of North Golden State Boulevard and East Canal Drive, the city’s eighth standalone Starbucks was also constructed and opened in 2021.

The new developments on the south end of town in 2021 were a change from the usual north end development seen around Monte Vista Crossings in recent years — a result of new ownership in the Turlock Town Center which has revitalized the space and attracted plenty of new businesses. 

“That new owner has really taken a proactive approach in trying to move tenants, find new tenants and really revitalize that center,” Deputy Director of Development Services and Planning Manager Katie Quintero said. “I think that really has spurred some development interest in that area.”

City seeking applicants for Parks, Planning seats

The City of Turlock is seeking local residents interested in serving on either of its two public commissions, for which a total of five seats are currently vacant. 

Following former Parks, Arts & Recreation Commissioner Randy Icelow’s announcement that Wednesday’s meeting would be his last, there are now three open seats on the commission which is typically comprised of seven Mayor-appointed individuals. The seven-member Planning Commission is also in need of applications with two vacancies of its own.

Family, community mourn loss of CHS grad Austin Stiles

Former Ceres High School multi-sport athlete Austin Stiles died in a car accident on Dec. 1 in Acampo.

He was just 24 years old.

Family members shared the devastating news on social media.

"This is probably the hardest post I will have to make, but with heavy hearts I do want to confirm that it is true that our wonderful kind big hearted boy Austin has left us," mother Meliesa Branson-Stiles wrote on Instagram. "I am so sorry to share this news this way but it is so hard for us to notify all of the people who he loved and cared about."
