California family creates drinking water out of thin air. Should more households try this tech?

in technology

The drinking water for a family near Keyes comes from an unusual source: It’s extracted from air.

Such systems could help parts of the Central Valley with polluted wells, and parts of the world where water is always in short supply.

The idea is being tested by the Valley Water Collaborative, which has delivered free bottled supplies since last year in parts of Stanislaus and Merced counties.

The new system yields just 10 gallons a day, but that’s enough for the drinking and cooking needs of a typical household.

The test unit was installed in May outside the Esmar Road home of Martha Lorenzo and her extended family. Their tap water had come from a well tainted by nitrate before the collaborative stepped in.

Another hit musical production headed for the Gallo Center. Where and when to see it

“Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” plays Aug. 13-21, the second summer production from Modesto Performing Arts, now in its 54th season.

MPA presented “A Chorus Line” in June, its first live performance since the coronavirus pandemic.

The upcoming production is based on the 1954 film starring Jane Powell and Howard Keel.

The show is a “rip-roaring version of the famous MGM musical,” according to a press release from MPA. “’Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ is an exuberant tale of the seven Pontipee brothers, hankerin’ for fun, fightin’, and frolickin’ in the 1850s Oregon wilderness.”

Why one of California’s most powerful wineries is rebranding as an organic company

in business/Food & Drinks

One of California’s most visible wine companies is changing its name to emphasize its focus on organic and sustainable farming. As of Tuesday, Mendocino County’s Fetzer Vineyards — the 19th largest winery in the U.S., according to Wine Business Monthly — will be known as Bonterra Organic Estates.

The rebranding shows the power that organic messaging increasingly holds for wine consumers, and it follows a string of moves by other mass-production wine companies to signal their environmental stewardship. The country’s largest winery, E. & J. Gallo, for example, recently launched a line of organic wines with its ubiquitous Black Box brand.

in Food & Drinks

August is National Coffee Month and if you are like me, you start your day off with a cup of coffee, I am and have been a serious coffee drinker my entire life, I buy whole beans and grind fresh daily(no Folger’s Crystals for me). Back in the nineties when friends would be out at the bars drinking I would be at a coffee shop(even going on trips to find cool cafes around the region.) I am even part of a rock n’ roll coffee-drinking gang(let’s call it a club)the US Mugs whose motto is Death Before Decaf. If I am addicted to anything it would be caffeine and music.

Those living in Modesto are pretty fortunate to have so many great locally owned cafes to choose from.

California program to help prospective homeowners with down payment

in Community/Housing

(KRON) – California will soon be rolling out a program that will help citizens pay for down payments. According to Zillow, the average house price as of Thursday in San Francisco is $1.4 million, and the surrounding Bay Area is not much cheaper.
