Military burn pit bill just signed by Biden includes Harder’s Agent Orange provision

The bill mainly provides benefits for more than 3.5 million veterans harmed by pits that disposed of chemical and other materials in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Local hospitals come together for Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive

Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock joined forces with Modesto’s Doctors Medical Center and Manteca’s Doctors Hospital to help local children and adults struggling with hunger.

As part of the Healthy Over Hunger Cereal Drive in early June, the final tallies show that the hospitals and community members donated over 15,000 servings of cereal and more than $3,700. The cereal and the funds will go directly towards Second Harvest of the Greater Valley, which is one of the largest food banks in the Central Valley.

West Nile detected in Turlock mosquito sample

The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency has confirmed that two mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus — one from the Turlock area and one from the east side of the county.

Three human cases of the virus have been identified in Stanislaus County. As of July 29, WNV has been detected in 23 California counties with the WNV activity confirmed in seven humans, 49 dead birds and 702 mosquito samples.

A look inside the amazing world of Turlock Comics

The city of Turlock has spent years without a comic book shop, leaving many collectors and enthusiasts with limited options. Luckily for the community, two friends have combined forces to create Turlock Comics.

Turlock Comics is owned and operated by Joey Aiello and Kyle Turner, who opened the shop on June 4. The pair decided to take the risk of opening the shop after bonding over the hobby amongst other aspects of their lives. Not only did they enjoy comic books and card games, but they each had experience in the military and took their daughters to the same gymnastics classes.

Animal shelter seeks to increase staffing, make volunteering easier

The City of Turlock is making a few changes at its animal shelter to ensure it is meeting the needs of Turlock’s citizenry — those on two and four legs.

The Turlock Animal Shelter — which is part of the police department — is tasked with providing education, protection, and the humane treatment of animals in the City in order to insure a safe and healthy community and to promote the benefits of responsible pet ownership.

Watchdog wants more accountability in Modesto-area efforts to reduce homelessness

While commending the efforts of government and others in Stanislaus County to take on the complex and challenging problem of homelessness, a government watchdog says despite spending huge amounts of money, homelessness continues to grow.

The Stanislaus County Civil Grand Jury also reports that it is hard to evaluate the coordination, effectiveness and accountability of these efforts because they are fragmented and there is not enough accountability in how effectively the money is being spent.

The grand jury’s investigation of the efforts to reduce homelessness are detailed in its 2021-22 report.
