Big Sky Conference’s winningest coach remembers BVU roots

The winningest coach in Big Sky Conference men’s basketball is a 1982 Buena Vista University graduate remembered more for baseball at his alma mater.

“In basketball, I was basically a walk-on,” says Randy Rahe, who earned his 300th victory as men’s basketball coach at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, earlier this season. “I was definitely a role player.”

Rahe, a native of Bancroft, was a four-year starter on the baseball diamond for BVU Hall-of-Famer, the late Coach Jay Beekmann. Rahe played second base for the Beavers, who earned league titles and defeated the defending national champs, the University of California at Stanislaus, in the 1980 regional tournament.

“I couldn’t wait to get to baseball practice when I was a student at Buena Vista,” Rahe says. “I loved Coach Beekmann to death. He was a great person, a great mentor, a man who taught me so much about life.”

Some 2022 high school football schedules released

Multiple high schools in the south Placer area have finalized their football schedules for the fall 2022 season and this week, we wanted to take a look at some of the matchups to look forward to for next fall.

Sierra Foothill League

The Rocklin Thunder is the defending champion in the Sierra Foothill League, following a 12-1 2021 season. The Thunder is preparing to have their first two games on the road as their track and turf are being redone at the football stadium. The Thunder will open their season on Aug. 19 away against Turlock. Their first home game will be on Sept. 2 against Capital Christian, a team that Rocklin defeated 43-14 in 2021.

Rocklin will be a part of the 2022 Honor Bowl, an annual showcase that features some of the best teams in Northern and Southern California. The Honor Bowl started at Del Oro High School and the Honor Group mission is to educate athletes and coaches about patriotism while also raising money for wounded veterans. This year, the two-day event will be hosted by Oak Ridge High School on Sept. 9 and Sept. 10.

The Thunder will have their bye week on Sept. 23.

The Granite Bay Grizzlies were second in league play last season and are looking to build off of that performance when they start competition against Elk Grove on Aug. 19. They will follow that up with two straight home games against Davis and Vista Del Lago before playing in the Honor Bowl on Sept. 9 against Spanish Springs. The Grizzlies will finish non-league action against Vacaville on Sept. 16, a team they defeated 14-9 in 2021, before having their bye week on Sept. 23.

Turlock golf edges out Enochs to win league championship

Turlock High golf was able to hold off Enochs High to win the CCAL Championship. This is the Bulldogs first championship in three years, before that they won 15 straight league titles.

The CCLA Championship was held at the Turlock and Golf Country Club on Monday. Going into the tournament, Turlock had a two-point lead over the second-place team Enochs. Therefore, if Enochs won the tournament and the Bulldogs took second, both schools would be co-champions. Turlock was able to pull out a narrow victory and are in sole possession in first place in the league.

The Harvest Bowl may have taken place in October instead of November on Friday night, but one thing remained the same: the Turlock High varsity football team defeated Pitman High 35-0 en route to their eighth-straight victory over their crosstown rivals.

The Bulldogs (2-4 overall, 1-0 CCAL) and Pride (1-4 overall, 0-1 CCAL) kicked off Central California Athletic League play against each other this week with the 18th annual Harvest Bowl — a rivalry game which brings the two adversaries together during what is typically the last league game of the season. This year, however, it was the first.

Turlock’s Sargis seeking continued success for Sac Republic

Since signing his first professional soccer contract in early 2020, Turlock native Hayden Sargis has made a name for himself as a member of Sacramento Republic FC. Now, the 19-year-old is fighting through injury to continue that success as he returns to the pitch this weekend. 

Sargis picked up a soccer ball almost as soon as he could walk, starting at age four and advancing as far as the Olympic Development Program and the East Valley FC Earthquakes by age 13. Sargis became a member of the Republic FC Academy system at its inception in 2015 and became known as a reliable defender, notching 109 appearances, 92 starts and three goals in U.S. Development Academy action. 

His prowess on the pitch earned Sargis his first-ever contract, which he signed with Republic FC prior to the 2020 USL Championship season and viewed as a lifelong goal finally attained. Although currently playing as a USL team, Republic FC will make the move to MLS come 2022.

Turlock American 12s return to field with standout season ending at State

The Turlock American Little League 12-year-old All Stars had an inspiring run this season, which culminated in the team finishing with a 4th place ranking in all of Northern California.

“There was a strong desire after the year everyone had with COVID,” said Coach Courtney Keyler.

“The kids practiced with a good mindset that showed on the field all the way through State,” said Coach John Arellano.

The TALL 12s started their 2021 run by sweeping through District competition at Soderquist Field in Turlock. They started with a 9-3 victory over Mariposa on July 6. Braydon Keyler had a standout performance with four hits, including a homerun. Keyler also pitched three innings with no hits and had eight strikeouts. Mason Hackler had three hits against Mariposa and Tanner Linhares had two.

LPGA great Annika Sorenstam co-leads U.S. Senior Women’s Open with a California teaching pro who can’t stop smiling

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Dana Ebster wasn’t sure what to make of the interview area on the porch at Brooklawn Country Club.

“Can we practice first?” she asked as she gingerly stepped up toward the mic. Ebster, by the way, rocked the interview.

Just before Ebster flew across the country to Connecticut, she was up at 6 a.m. pulling carts out at Turlock Golf and Country Club in central California where she runs a junior clinic and works in the pro shop.

STOCKTON – Turlock American enjoyed a five-run fifth inning Saturday and Northgate could not recover in an 8-5 opening-round loss in the Section 6 All-Star Tournament at Christa McAuliffe Middle School’s Bruneel Field.

Tony Sanchez had the big bat for Northgate, going 2 for 3 with a pair of ground-rule doubles that knocked in three runs – Travis Rose (two runs) in the third and sixth innings and Colten Nascimento in the sixth.

In the fourth inning Northgate’s Landyn Parker plated Logan Ortega on a fielder’s choice and Kylil Mallory scooted home on a wild pitch.

Turlock used the long ball in the fifth inning – Wyatt Smith belted a two-run home run and Izak Marquez legged out a two-RBI triple.

Stan State alumnus earns spot on U.S. Olympic baseball team

Former Stanislaus State pitcher and current Tampa Bay Rays prospect Joe Ryan was recently named to USA Baseball’s 24-man roster and will compete in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer. 

Baseball is returning to the Olympics for the first time since 2008 and Ryan will be part of the team’s starting rotation. The 12th-ranked prospect in the Rays system, Ryan currently pitches in the minor leagues for the Durham Bulls. He was a member of the qualifying roster for Team USA and helped them go 4-0 in the qualifying games last month.

Turlock High basketball says goodbye to longtime coach

The Turlock High School boys basketball program will look a bit different next season as its leader, Doug Cornfoot, retires from coaching the varsity team. 

After 15 years and three league championships, Cornfoot decided to hang it up following the COVID-shortened 2020 season, where the Bulldogs finished third in Central California Athletic League play with a 5-4 record. 

After 20 total years of coaching, which included five years at Delhi High School before he came to Turlock, Cornfoot noted that the decades had taken a toll on his body and resulted in many sleepless nights. The absence of summer ball last year helped him realize it was time to step back from the sport, he said.
