City seeks input on Columbia Pool renovation

in Places & Recreation

As community members, philanthropic leaders and even elected officials called into a virtual town hall meeting hosted by the Columbia Park Master Plan Ad Hoc Committee on Monday night, they made one thing clear: the plan to renovate the park and its aquatic features needs to take into consideration the opinions of those who matter most, the residents of Turlock’s westside.

After the City Council appropriated $40,000 in funding for a facility evaluation study in November 2019, Aquatic Design Group conducted an assessment of the pool and spray ground at Columbia Park. There was a total of 18 violations discovered during the assessment, all of which pose a liability to the health and safety of the public and many that would not allow the pool to open legally, even if it could during the coronavirus pandemic.

This led City staff to create a Columbia Park Master Plan, which was presented to the City Council and the Parks, Arts and Recreation Commission during a joint meeting in July. The plan features three rehabilitation options for the pool that would take care of its existing problems. Since the swimming pool was built in 1957, it has undergone minor renovations and facility updates. The pool has only been replastered once, in 1999.

100-POUND MOUNTAIN LION ATTACKS GIRL, 6, IN CALIFORNIA PARK

in Places & Recreation

A nature preserve park in California’s Santa Clara County has been temporarily closed after a 6-year-old girl was bitten in the leg by what is believed to be a mountain lion on Sunday morning. The child’s injuries were minor. An investigation has been launched to locate and confirm the identity of the animal, which is thought to be an adult male lion, park authorities confirmed.

The incident took place at the Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve near the city of Cupertino around 9:45 a.m. (local time) while the girl was on a walking trail with her family. Her father managed to scare away the animal, which reportedly weighed about 100 pounds, just after it bit the girl in the calf.

San Francisco needs to pay the price for desecrating Yosemite National Park

in Places & Recreation/Environment

Those who are the most politically correct among those that lecture the rest of the state from their perches atop the 40 plus hills of San Francisco about the environmental shortcomings of the rest of California should take a long hard look in the mirror.

They thrive on some of the original — and most hideous — environmental sins ever committed in the Golden State. Topping the laundry list running from filling in the bay to resisting tougher car emission testing for years because the winds cleared out their smog and sent it into the Central Valley is the desecration of a national park.

How the California Wildfires Are Impacting Tourism

in Places & Recreation/Business & Economy

After several years of unprecedented wildfires, many of them raging through national forests and the celebrated Napa/Sonoma wine region, California’s tourism industry is up against what former Governor Jerry Brown calls “the new abnormal.”

While visitor numbers remain strong, California tourism marketers are grappling with other challenges, some of them exacerbated by the fires. These issues include a lack of affordable housing for service employees and the need to steer wine tourism away from the popular — and most fire-prone — fall harvest season.

There are also worries that the image of the Golden State may be irrevocably tarnished.

Walk for Apraxia in Modesto raises money to help children with speech disorder

in Places & Recreation

A walk in the park to help kids talk.

On Sept. 28, Walk for Apraxia is having its second annual local event in La Loma Park in Modesto. All ages are welcome.

“I’m involved because I’m a parent of a child with childhood apraxia,” said Janell Konefat, organizer of the Modesto walk. Her son, Antony Konefat, was diagnosed at age 3 and has been receiving speech therapy since then. He is now 6 and his speech has improved from about 30% to 75% understandable.

Konefat attributes her son’s improvement to the help he received from the nonprofit organization, Apraxia Kids. Antony received an iPad with a special program to help him communicate, in addition to therapy from a speech therapist in Turlock.
