This California City Has Been Named the Drug Overdoses Capital of the State

San Francisco, the city of the Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and tech innovation, has also earned a dubious distinction: it has the highest rate of drug overdoses in California, and one of the highest in the nation.

According to data from the California Department of Public Health, San Francisco recorded 713 fatal drug overdoses in 2020, more than double the number of deaths from COVID-19 in the same year. The city’s overdose death rate was 81.2 per 100,000 residents, far surpassing other large cities in the state such as Los Angeles (26.1), San Diego (24.6), and San Jose (12.3).

Body found on canal bank in south Modesto. Stanislaus sheriff’s detectives investigating

Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating a suspicious death in south Modesto.

At about 6:45 a.m., a person walking her dog reported that she found what appeared to be a dead person, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Sgt. Luke Schwartz said.

Gang Member’s Deadly Rampage: A Dark Day in California

California has been left in shock following a deadly shooting spree by Louis Peter Hernandez, a 41-year-old known gang member with a history of violence. The tragic events began on November 25th in Fontana, where Hernandez fatally shot his girlfriend and another individual. Moving to Riverside County, the rampage continued with the murder of his ex-girlfriend. A fourth victim also sustained gunshot injuries. Hernandez, who was under probation and post-release community supervision, has been charged with three counts of murder and one count of assault with a firearm.

The pursuit of homicide suspect Vicente Jasso started Monday morning in Madera and quickly moved north.

Jasso is accused of murdering his former girlfriend, Melanie Camacho, of Firebaugh who had been missing since Friday.

2,500 pounds of pot seized by sheriff’s deputies serving warrant near school in Modesto

A search warrant served at an illegal pot grow in Modesto on Friday morning found about 900 plants plus processed marijuana, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office reported.

The search was conducted about 7 a.m. at a residence on the 900 block of Lenore Court, just east of Mark Twain Jr. High School in west Modesto. Thirteen people initially were taken into custody and four firearms were seized, Sgt. Luke Schwartz told The Bee.

Another fatal hit-and-run. This time a bicyclist is killed in Modesto

A bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run on the 3700 block of McHenry Avenue on Tuesday evening, according to the Modesto Police Department.

Investigators are asking for the public’s help in looking for a white, or light-colored, 2010 to 2013 model Kia Soul last seen traveling southbound on McHenry Avenue. The vehicle should have had damage to its windshield and passenger side, according to a police statement.

COURT WATCH: Stanislaus County Judge Reduces Charge to Misdemeanor after Testimony

 Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Dawna Reeves last week reduced the accused’s charge from a felony to a misdemeanor in an alleged assault case after hearing testimonies from two witnesses and the arguments presented by Deputy District Attorney James Howard Langston and Deputy Public Defender Amy Elizabeth Kennedy.

Ruling there were inconsistencies between the alleged victim’s report and witness testimony, the judge contended she could not charge, even as a misdemeanor, the punishment for an act resulting in significant bodily injury or death, citing the victim’s demeanor and odd behavior.

Ex-roommate who ambushed and shot Stanislaus dairy worker is convicted of murder

A Bay Area man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his former Modesto roommate on New Year’s Day 2021, the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office reported Saturday. The jury also found that Eric Mills was “lying in wait,” a special circumstance, when he shot Teodoro “Teo” Gutierrez, 52.

East Palo Also resident Mills, now 41, had been roommates with the victim. According to previous Bee reporting, Gutierrez’s girlfriend told detectives Mills was kicked out six months earlier due to his drug use. She said Mills threatened to kill Gutierrez but they never made a police report, according to the arrest affidavit.

 Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office officials report that on October 27th, 2023, the Stanislaus County Sheriff Office’s Special Victims Unit collaborated with the Turlock Police Department, California State Parole and Stanislaus County Probation Department to complete its third annual sexual registrant Halloween compliance operation.

It has been the objective of the Sheriff Department’s Special Victims Unit to keep Halloween festivities safe by conducting compliance checks on sex offenders (290 PC). These compliance checks ensure accountability of sexual registrants’ terms and conditions are being met.

Teen remains hospitalized after being shot in the street near Ceres, authorities say

A teenage boy was in critical but stable condition Saturday morning after being shot in the street in an unincorporated part of Ceres, the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Sgt. Luke Schwartz said the call regarding the shooting came in about 4:20 p.m. Friday. He said the shooting took place in the street in the 7600 block of Foy Avenue. The area is in what is called the Monterey Park Tract.
