Rev up for a return of Modesto’s monthlong summer celebration. When, where to be

in Around California/Entertainment/Upcoming event

Modesto’s annual summer celebration gets back to where it belongs this year.

Graffiti Summer returns to June with a month of events planned for car lovers and fans of Modesto native George Lucas’ film homage to his hometown teen years, 1973’s “American Graffiti.”

Two stars from the film are set to appear at separate events.

Last year’s events were held in August, pushed because of the pandemic, which canceled completely the 2020 celebration.

The move to August didn’t appear to deter from the event, according to Todd Aaronson, CEO of the Modesto Convention & Visitors Bureau, which markets the summer celebration.

This Will Soon Be California’s Newest State Park, Here’s What Makes It Special

It’s been a long time since this last happened, but it now appears California is set to open a new state park.

The 2,500-acre property, which was once home to dairy pastures and almond orchards, will be California’s 280th state park — and the first new state park to open since Fort Ord Dunes near Monterey in 2009, according to The Modesto Bee. Gavin Newsom, California’s governor, announced last week that he is allocating $5 million for the new park as part of his state budget proposal.

UC System Takes Another Step Toward Keeping Students Debt-Free

The University of California is vowing to offer its California undergraduates a debt-free college experience by 2030 as part of an overhaul of how the system views college affordability.

To get there, the system of 230,000 students seeking bachelor’s degrees is relying on a mix of state and federal support, revenues from recent tuition increases, and students working part-time to cover the full cost of an education. Students from wealthier households would also rely on parental support.

Here’s What to Know About SpaceX’s Friday the 13th California Launch

A SpaceX rocket is schedule to soar over the California coast Friday afternoon.

The Falcon 9 rocket launch is scheduled for 3:07 p.m. from Vandenberg Space Force Base northwest of Santa Barbara. The rocket will carry 53 Starlink Internet satellites into low-Earth orbit.

In a tweet, SpaceX said weather conditions are 40-percent favorable for liftoff. Strong winds are expected Friday afternoon in parts of Southern California and Central Coast.

The first stage rocket booster will return to Earth and land on the Of Course I Still Love You droneship in the Pacific Ocean.

Alaska Airlines creates special experience to boost California tourism

Alaska Airlines at San Francisco International Airport is getting creative to encourage people to fly by giving travelers a special Star Wars experience. The airline painted an aircraft black with a massive millennium falcon on the tail fighting with tie fighters.

"It is bringing that joy and that fun to people and I think that’s what this aircraft does," Neil Thwaites Alaska Airlines Regional Vice President of California said.

David Perry is on the Board of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, he said companies are looking to tap into the pent-up demand to travel.
