Best counties to retire to in California

in Around California

Buyers and sellers of real estate alike—when asked what are the three most essential considerations about a property—will nearly always reply “location, location, location.” While this answer is sometimes tongue-in-cheek, it is often quite accurate, and this reply perhaps applies to retirees more than any other demographic. Settling down after a lifetime of working and perhaps raising a family calls for the perfect location: a spot where you can enjoy life with as few concerns as possible.

When seniors aged 65 years or older decide on where they want to live out their golden years, they consider very specific factors, such as the cost of living, government services, health care facilities, weather and overall climate, crime rate, outdoor recreational activities, eating establishments, cultural and entertainment opportunities, and more.

Two whales give tour thrilling encounter off California coast

in Around California/Fun

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KSWB) – Two giant gray whales thrilled a tour group with their up-close antics off the coast of Southern California last week, bobbing, rolling, and even flashing their tails within a few feet of the small raft.

Experts call the behavior “mugging,” and it displays the kind of gentle curiosity that has earned the species the nickname “friendly whales.” The length and proximity of the encounter, which happened Thursday evening off the coast of Newport Beach, excited even veterans at the whale watching company that organized the tour.

CA to stop requiring vaccine proof, negative tests at concerts, other large indoor events

in Around California

California will lift COVID-19 vaccine and negative test requirements for large indoor events like concerts and games starting April 1, state officials announced last week.

Verification of full vaccination against COVID-19 and pre-entry negative test results will be strongly recommended by the state — but no longer required — at indoor “mega” events with more than 1,000 attendees.

Masks are strongly recommended at mega events, but are also not mandated by the state.

The state is shedding the vaccine verification requirement as California emerges from an omicron-fueled surge that sent numbers skyrocketing during the winter.

California got federal funding for electric buses. Is your town on the list?

in Around California/Transportation

Your bus could be electric in the near future, thanks to a couple of federal funds.

Some transit and school buses in California are already electric. The California Air Resources Board, which sets state policy on air pollution, mandated in 2018 that California transit bus fleets be zero emission by 2040. All bus purchases in 2029 and after must be battery electric or fuel cell electric, per the mandate.

Federal funds can help in that endeavor. The Federal Transit Authority, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, announced their allocations for buses from the 2021 fiscal year. More than a dozen California transit agencies would get federal funding to replace old public transit buses:

Reese Witherspoon Selling Spectacular California Estate for $25 Million — See Inside! [Pictures]

in Around California/Community

Reese Witherspoon has put her spectacular mansion in one of the most exclusive areas of Los Angeles back on the market, just two years after purchasing the luxurious residence. The Oscar-winning actor is asking $25 million for her newly renovated mansion in Mandeville Canyon, which is $9 million more than she paid for it in March of 2020.

Witherspoon and her husband, Hollywood talent agent Jim Toth, bought the 7-bedroom, 9-bathroom, 9,504-square-foot estate for $16 million in March of 2020. The English Country-style manor sits on three acres of very private, gated land in a canyon in Los Angeles on what the new listing calls "one of the most secluded streets in Los Angeles."

The house has been expanded into 7 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and 10,343 total square feet, and the exterior has been re-painted white, while the interior has been updated to an even more lavish standard than before. The gated estate features custom-designed finishes and woodwork in every room, with high ceilings and highest-end finishes throughout. The front doors open into a stunning two-story foyer with black & white marble and limestone tile framed and a sweeping white oak staircase.

California’s Original Ski Resort Is One of the Sierras’ Best Kept Secrets

in Around California/Entertainment/Fun
Yosemite National Park

When it comes to classic California ski trips, Lake Tahoe and Mammoth Mountain are the big two — but nestled among towering red fir and lodgepole pines above the Yosemite Valley floor, Badger Pass has been a local “in the know” spot for generations. Opened in 1935, it’s one of the oldest ski resorts in the U.S. — and one of only three ski areas serviced by a lift system in a National Park (Hurricane Ridge in Olympic, Washington, and Boston Mills/Brandywine in Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley, being the other two).

Badger is a reassuringly mom-and-pop kind of place. It’s small (there are five lifts, ten runs, and one terrain park) and sits at 7,200 feet elevation, with only natural snow and adult all-day lift tickets that cost an entirely reasonable $62.
