Record-breaking heat wave continues to bake Modesto as people seek ways to stay cool

At least 67 people used cooling centers in Stanislaus County over the Labor Day holiday weekend heat wave, according to the county Office of Emergency Services.

That number is only for people who stayed at one of the eight county branch libraries that served as cooling centers and does not include people who used cooling centers at a few other locations, such as the Patterson City Hall lobby, Ceres Community Center and Oakdale’s Gladys L. Lemmons Senior Center.

Driver killed in head-on crash near Keyes, California Highway Patrol reports

A driver was killed early Sunday in a head-on collision just east of Keyes, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The two-vehicle crash happened about 1:10 a.m. on Keyes Road east of Pioneer Road.

The driver of a 2008 Mazda3 was eastbound on Keyes Road at an “unknown but high rate of speed,” according to a CHP news release.

Driver killed when he strikes power pole, is ejected from vehicle, which then runs over him

A driver who was ejected upon crashing into a power pole and then was run over by his vehicle died at the scene just outside Turlock late Saturday night, the California Highway Patrol reported.

According to a news release on the crash, the 51-year-old Stockton resident was driving a 2011 Honda west on West Monte Vista Avenue at about 60 mph.

Modesto police detectives arrested two Stockton men on suspicion of robbing an elderly woman in the Costco parking lot on Pelandale Avenue on Wednesday.

The 71-year-old victim was sitting in her vehicle just after noon when one of the men opened the passenger door and grabbed her purse from the seat, said Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear. Her purse contained her credit cards, cell phone and money.
