Women’s History Month: Celebrating and remembering what still needs to change

In 1987 the U.S Congress designated March as National Women’s History Month to recognize and celebrate the contributions and achievements of women in America.  This special designation provides an opportunity for the nation to celebrate women as leaders, visionaries, mothers, teachers, nurses, doctors and more.

In Turlock and across the Central Valley, we are surrounded by exceptional women who have redefined struggles and success.  Some were the genesis of transformational change; others celebrate life every day being able to contribute not for recognition but because of their faith and spirituality.  Each of us has a roster of heroes.  Mine grows every day.

Some have raised families on their own. Some struggled to overcome addiction. Some had a vision for what could be and made it happen.  The women I honor below are incredible, humble people.  They do not seek recognition, but they certainly deserve it.  In their own way, each fights against discrimination, neglect and the status quo every day.  Each underscores what can be when determination mixed with passion and sprinkled with unwavering faith come together.

Coronavirus leads to suspension of traffic court, closure of police lobbies

Traffic Court in Stanislaus was suspended Wednesday through Friday, April 17 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Anyone scheduled for traffic court during that time period will, over the next few weeks, receive a written notice by mail with the date and time of their continued hearing, according to an announcement on the court’s website.

Law enforcement officers who write traffic tickets during this time are being instructed to schedule court dates 90 to 120 days out instead of the normal 60, according to Modesto Police spokeswoman Sharon Bear.

Turlock song receives professional treatment

Turlock is a special place for many of its residents, but for the first time in its 112-year history the city’s virtues have been extolled in song.

When Turlock Mayor Amy Bublak approached U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jeremy Levens several months ago about using his musical talents to create a song for her State of the City address, Levens said the project sounded like fun.

Levens sings and plays guitar at his local church and this wasn’t the first time he’s written a song. He started the Turlock song project by finding the perfect rhythm. Once he had the sound he was looking for, he started writing lyrics about the different aspects that make up Turlock, including:

Sacramento-Area Substitute Teacher Dies From Coronavirus Complications

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A substitute teacher for Sacramento City Unified School District has died from complications of the coronavirus, district officials confirmed Monday.

The identity of the teacher has not yet been released. This is the second death in Sacramento County. Public Health officials said both individuals who died from complications of COVID-19 were older than 70 and had underlying health conditions.

The instructor, who also was a temporary volunteer, worked at Sutterville Elementary School in February.

California’s coronavirus death toll rises to 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in California rose to 4 after the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic over the virus.

Los Angeles County public health officials announced the state's latest death related to the virus on Wednesday. The case marks the first death reported in LA County.

A woman over the age of 60 died after contracting COVID-19, health officials said. The woman, who has not been publically identified, was visiting friends and had underlying health conditions.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her family and her friends and we’re really sorry to be making this announcement today,” Los Angeles County Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer told reporters Wednesday.

Two Stanislaus County residents test positive for coronavirus

The coronavirus has reached Stanislaus County, with health officials announcing that two men in the county have tested positive for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the Stanislaus County Public Health received confirmation that two adult male residents of the county have tested positive for the novel coronavirus by the California Department of Public Health. These tests will be confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One person was a passenger on the Grand Princess Cruise to Mexico and one has no history of travel to a country with known community transmission and no known contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Stanislaus County opens ‘books for keeps’ library in lobby of Hackett Road facility

Two-year-old Aiden Jones from Turlock wasn’t interested in the county leaders’ speeches at The Book Club Opening Day on Wednesday.

Instead, he was enthralled with all the books in the new children’s library in the lobby of the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency on Hackett Road.

The goal of the library is to put a book in the hands of every child who visits county facilities. Parents and caregivers can read the books to their children while waiting for an appointment, and then they may take the books home.

Freeway camps present major eyesores, safety issues

Scattered along the stretch of Highway 99 between Service Road and downtown Modesto freeway off-ramps is a growing collection of homeless camps –marked by large piles of debris – offering visual blight impossible for motorists to ignore and shaking the heads of Chamber of Commerce folks.

One such camp south of the Hatch Road overpass – which the city’s code enforcement unit has cleared out a number of times – places occupants walking and camping dangerously just feet away from freeway traffic. Another camp with its makeshift living quarters and scattered debris greet motorists negotiating the westbound Hatch Road off-ramp.
