Turlock Police plan for return of National Night Out

After a year hiatus because of the pandemic, the Turlock Police Department is putting plans in motion for the annual National Night Out celebration.

This year's event is set from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Aug. 3. The police department is currently looking for neighborhoods to register their location and join in on the city-wide festivities.

National Night Out is a night when residents lock their doors, turn on outside lights and spend the evening outdoors getting to know their neighbors and local law enforcement. National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

Portuguese festival returning to Turlock

After a successful inaugural event in 2019, the San Joaquin Valley Portuguese Festival will return to Turlock this summer following a year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The Carlos Vieira Foundation hosted the first SJVPF in April 2019 and it was a huge success, with nearly 15,000 community members from Turlock and beyond making their way out to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds to enjoy Portuguese food, dancing, music and entertainment. The festival not only allows people of all backgrounds to discover what Portuguese culture has to offer, but also raises money for the CVF’s Race for Autism campaign in order to help Central Valley families who have children living with autism.

Recreational opportunities returning for Turlock youth

As life begins a return to normalcy amid the easement of COVID restrictions and vaccine success, parents in Turlock have the opportunity to keep their kids busy this summer with the return of two popular activities. 

The City of Turlock’s Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities department is once again hosting a summer camp for children in kindergarten through sixth grade, but due to the max capacity of 50 children there is currently a waitlist to sign up for the program. It will be held from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 7 through July 30 in the cafeteria at Pitman High School for $110 per week and an annual fee of $15.

Drivers, cyclists can take steps for bike safety

May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and the Turlock Police Department is encouraging drivers to slow down when passing bicyclists, and asks bicyclists to be visible, predictable, and safe on the road.

“Bicyclists are safest when they act like and are treated the same as drivers,” Turlock Police Sgt. David Hall said. “Please share the road with bicyclists and think of them as your closest friends or family. We all want to get where we need to go safely, whether that is in the car or on a bike.”

Bill would help out county fairs

Following the cancellation of fairs throughout the state this summer due to the coronavirus pandemic, Rep. Josh Harder is hoping a new bill he introduced this week will help alleviate some of their economic strain and keep them afloat until next year.

During a virtual round table discussion held via Zoom on Thursday, Harder announced the Protecting Fairs During Coronavirus Act — a legislative effort that would create an emergency grant program to help offset the massive revenue losses experienced by fairs this year. Californians throughout the state generate approximately $3.5 billion in economic impact each year by attending the fair.

Locally, the Stanislaus County Fair boasted an attendance of over 260,000 in 2019. After announcing in April that the annual event in Turlock would be canceled, however, the fair has issued layoff notices to most of its employees and is in danger of operating at a deficit by October if no action is taken.

Turlock residents Lynne and Forester Wescott have been kickboxing enthusiasts for years, from their time living in Southern California as newlyweds to moments spent in Texas where they helped grow a community for the sport from the ground up.

When they returned to Turlock a few years ago to be closer to family, they knew the town’s citizens could use a space where they, too, could take out their frustrations on a punching bag — all while getting a great workout in.

Next month, that vision now known as The Bag Lab Fitness will celebrate its one-year anniversary of offering full body workouts that push clients not only physically, but mentally as well.

If you didn’t get your fill of Soarin’ Over California last summer you’ll get another chance to hang glide over Napa Valley, Monterey Bay and Redwood Creek when the classic version of the flight simulator ride returns to Disney California Adventure for another limited-time run.

Soarin’ Over California will return Feb. 28 to April 21 during the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival at the Anaheim theme park, according to Disney officials. An end date for Soarin’ Over California hasn’t been confirmed yet, Disney officials said.

Kindergartner tries to spread positivity through ‘joy box’ in his front yard

TURLOCK, Calif. (KTXL) - A California kindergartner aims to spread happiness - and plans to start in his family’s front yard.

“Get to write a note and then you get to put it in here. And we get the key, put it in, unlock it and take it out then the wish comes true,” said Levi Navarra. “It’s called the Joy Box.”

Six-year-old Levi said he believes that finding happiness is as easy as visiting the Joy Box, according to KTXL.

Modesto’s downtown ice skating rink getting new owner, staying in business

It looks like Modesto On Ice — the popular ice skating rink that has drawn more than 230,000 people to downtown since its first season in 2015 — will not close.

The owners have lined up a buyer to continue operating the rink that has been a boon for downtown and offers family friendly fun.

Turlock husband and wife Dave and Kathy Halsey are in the process of buying Modesto On Ice and expect the purchase will be completed after the current season ends Jan. 20.
