Scams are on the rise across the U.S. — and as the country faces this growing trend, older adults in Modesto have lost thousands of dollars.

Data from the Federal Trade Commission shows a more than 30% increase in money lost due to fraud between 2021 and 2022 nationwide, with a total loss of almost $8.8 billion.

Man beaten by group with bars and bats after altercation at house party early Friday morning

On Friday, May 12th, 2023, at 12:50 am, the Turlock Police Department, Turlock Fire Department, and American Medical Response were dispatched to a reported aggravated assault that had just occurred in the alleyway behind a residence in the 300 block of S Broadway, Turlock.

When crews arrived on scene, they found a 33-year-old man who had been beaten with bars and bats by a group of several subjects who had all fled the scene.

License plate-reading cameras will watch for stolen vehicles in Turlock. Here’s where

in Community/crime/News

The Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department and Turlock are entering an agreement to use automated license-plate readers at six locations in the city.

Turlock will join an automated reader system that’s used in cities that contract for sheriff’s service, including Hughson, Patterson and Waterford.

Two arrested during traffic stop early Thursday morning

On Thursday, May 4th, 2023, at 12:18 am, a Turlock Police officer near the intersection of Geer Rd and E Tuolumne Rd, Turlock, observed a man driving a vehicle with a headlight out, so he made a traffic stop on him.

The officer made contact with and identified the vehicle’s two occupants, driver Hector Cardenas, 22, of Turlock, and passenger Diego Ornelas, 23, of Turlock.

Drunk driver arrested after being involved in two collisions with parked vehicles Sunday night

On Sunday, April 30th, 2023, at 8:25 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported vehicle collision that had just occurred in front of a residence in the 300 block of Lander Ave, Turlock.

When officers arrived on scene, they found three vehicles involved. The first was a white 2009 Dodge Challenger, the second was a black 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, and the third was a black 2020 Acura ILX.

‘We still have hope’ | Family of kidnapped Modesto woman hopeful for return

 It’s been over two years since a Modesto mother and her kids were kidnapped outside of Richy's Mini Mart in Modesto. Officials say it happened at gunpoint by someone they knew, and while the kids were later dropped off safely, the mom, Susana Torres, is still missing.

“She was a very happy and outgoing person,” said Yazmin Cruz, a cousin of Torres. “Mainly, she just loves being around the family, just spending time with us.”

$4.2M worth of drugs seized, 7 arrested in major Merced County bust

California’s law enforcement has helped seize $4.2 million in drugs.

Last month—in Merced County during two different traffic stops, the California Highway Patrol seized 40 pounds of fentanyl and 104 pounds of meth.

During these incidents, a total of seven people were arrested.

Woman trespassing at high school arrested after resisting officers Friday morning

On Friday, April 28th, 2023, at 6:33 am, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported trespass in progress at Pitman High School, 2525 W Christoffersen Pkwy, Turock, where a woman in front of the front office was refusing to leave and becoming belligerent with staff.

When officers arrived on scene, the woman, later identified as Lakiesha Barkus, 38, of Palo Alto, briefly left, however, returned back onto campus from a different spot.

Woman robs grocery store and uses children to aid in her escape Wednesday night

On Wednesday, April 26th, 2023, at 8:30 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported robbery that had just occurred at Walmart Neighborhood Market, 2480 Geer Rd, Turlock.

When officers arrived on scene, they contacted employees who stated that they saw a woman leaving the business with a shopping cart full of unpaid merchandise, so one of them confronted her.
