Meet Dr. Kwane Stewart, ‘The Street Vet’ who treats homeless people’s pets across CA for free

CALIFORNIA (KABC) -- For the last nine years, Dr. Kwane Stewart has spent his free time as a veterinarian treating pets on California's streets for free.

The 49-year-old drives around the state helping the animals of people experiencing homelessness, providing everything from flea treatments to vaccinations and more.

Before he eventually became known as "The Street Vet," Stewart ran an animal hospital and went on to be the county veterinarian for Stanislaus in Modesto, California, according to CCN. But when the financial crisis hit the U.S. in 2008, he was inspired to do more.

The Modesto man fatally shot by police officers at a Motel 6 on Friday night can be seen lifting a mattress and grabbing a gun in the moments just before he was shot, body camera footage shows.

Modesto police were at the motel at 1920 West Orangeburg Avenue to assist a bail bondsman with taking 54-year-old Raymond Lee into custody. Lee had outstanding felony warrants, according to a press release from the Modesto Police Department.

In the video released by police, officers can be seen and heard banging on the motel room door, announcing they are police, and ordering Lee to come out with his hands up.

They did this for about a minute before using a key card to open the door.

TURLOCK, Calif. — Lauren Hassett knew something was wrong the moment she was approached by a stranger that didn't even bother knocking on her front door.

The Turlock mother told ABC10 that she was coming out of her house and into her garage when she spotted a man standing there, waiting.

"He said he was with AMBER Alert, and he wanted to finish up a DNA file so he wanted fingerprints," Hassett recalled. "And he specifically asked for five strands of [my daughter's] hair."

Hassett said the man hit her neighborhood on Wednesday night. But a second parent told ABC10 that the same man allegedly hit her neighborhood on the other side of town — at least 15 minutes away on Saturday — with two different stories.

ORANGE COUNTY (CBSLA) — A new study has found that more people are dying from opioid overdoses in Orange County compared to other parts of California.

According to a study by the county, heroin and fentanyl overdoses have climbed in the O.C. since 2016.

The study also found that the opioid overdose death rate for Orange County is higher than the statewide rate.

Opioid-blocking drugs, like Narcan, have been named the gold standard for combating opioid addiction, however, less than half of Orange County’s addiction treatment centers currently carry the drug.
