Student in critical condition after being pulled from Turlock High pool Friday night

A student was in critical condition after being pulled late Friday from the Turlock High School swimming pool, the district said.

The student was part of a group that entered the locked swimming complex about 11:30 p.m., said an email Saturday from Marie Russell, director of communications for the Turlock Unified School District.

Cal Poly Students Use Drones To Study Elephant Seals

Cal Poly researchers have a new tool to keep track of the local elephant seal population. The team consisting of graduate students, undergraduate volunteers and professors use drones to conduct their research during the seals’ current mating season.

The project began in 2017 but this is the first year they were able to incorporate drone images. The research team will begin to analyze drone images in March, once the breeding season has ended.

Kate Riordan is a graduate student in the Biological Sciences department and is a part of this research team. Like the rest of the team, Riordan helps to fly the drones and makes sure they don’t crash. She also helps weigh the baby seals and tags them in order to track where the seals will end up.

Turlock High student looks to give back during the cold months

Nihal Gill, a junior at Turlock High, and was inspired to give back to those in need one day when he was on his way to school and saw a man outside in need of a coat.

“My mind started to think about how many people were probably trying to survive through these winter months without a coat. I wanted to do something to help people stay warm during the dead, cold winters,” said Gill.

Teen stabbed at Turlock High

A Turlock High School student was critically injured in a stabbing on campus, carried out by another student, who is now in custody, according to the Turlock Police Department.

The male victim, whose age is unknown, was taken by air ambulance to a trauma center with multiple stab wounds. The injuries were considered life-threatening, according to the police department.

Survey: Decrease in student substance abuse; increase in mental health issues

Turlock Unified School District recently received the results of the California School Climate, Health and Learning Survey which showed students participating in less substance abuse compared to two years ago, however, more students experienced chronic sadness or hopelessness.

“I’m happy to see the decrease in substance abuse. In some situations, it’s almost double and I think it speaks to those smaller learning environments that we know are necessary and I’m grateful students are finding that safe space to meet their needs,” said Superintendent Dana Trevethan.
