Dropping balls for good causes

Usually, the phrase “dropping the ball” has a negative connotation, but that’s not the case for the Ball Drop for Turlock.

The fourth annual event, rebranded this year as the Ball Drop for Turlock, will be held Oct. 21 at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds.

Money is raised for local charities — Adult & Teen Challenge, Turlock Gospel Mission, the Salvation Army and the Police Activities League — by selling individual golf balls for $25 apiece. Essentially, it’s a round, dimpled lottery ticket.

Parents advised to pay attention to warning signs of suicide

With September being “Suicide Prevention Month,” mental health experts are doing their part to educate parents and others about risk factors and warning signs.

On average, one person in Stanislaus County kills themselves each week. Most of them are male.

According to the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP), youth who are contemplating suicide frequently give warning signs and parents should not be afraid to ask about suicidal thoughts. NASP also advises parents and others to never take warning signs lightly or promise to keep them secret.

Man shot while driving his vehicle in Modesto

 A man was driving in Modesto overnight when he was shot.

Modesto police say there was a shooting in the area of McHenry and Woodrow avenues between midnight and 2 a.m. During that time, an officer pulled a driver over for a traffic-related issue, and when the officer made contact with the driver, a male, the driver told the officer he had been shot but that he didn't know who shot him.

Firefighters battle barn blaze

All Turlock Fire units responded to a working structure fire in the 900 block of Souza St. at approximately 4:56 p.m. Monday. First arriving crews found smoke and flames coming from the second story of a barn. Crews brought the fire under control within 30 minutes.

Through Turlock Fire’s resource sharing partners, two additional engines, one truck, and one additional battalion chief also responded. Crews worked for an extended period of time conducting overhaul of the fire building. There were no injuries reported and no residents were displaced.
