Another pedestrian dies, days after Modesto police announce grant for new safety efforts

A male pedestrian died Saturday after being struck on McHenry Avenue about midblock between Sylvan and Woodrow avenues, the Modesto Police Department reported.

The crash occurred about 7:20 p.m., according to a Modesto Fire Department incident summary. Emergency responders found the man down in the road, suffering major injuries. He was taken to a medical center, where he died.

Floodwaters on farms help boost aquifers

The historically wet winter early this year motivated greater adoption of a water management strategy known as flood-managed aquifer recharge, or flood-MAR, in which excess flood flows are diverted onto farmland to boost depleted groundwater aquifers.

“We knew from the previous year, even in intense drought years, we have opportunities with these big storm events and need to do everything we can,” said California Department of Water Resources Director Karla Nemeth, addressing water managers, farmers, government officials and others, as part of the Flood-MAR Forum in Sacramento last week. “Our ability to respond to those kinds of intense rain events is becoming increasingly important.”

Empty the Shelter

The Stanislaus Animal Services Agency is inviting the community to participate in a special "Empty the Shelter" event, sponsored in memory of Kyle MacDonald. All adoption fees for dogs will be waived during this event, taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

November marks one of the busiest times of the year for animals coming into the shelter, and SASA seeks the support of the community to find loving homes for the many dogs awaiting adoption.
