Sacramento area events to pay tribute to victims of 9/11

Monday marks 22 years since the devastating attack on the World Trade Center in New York.  

Nearly 3,000 people were killed as a result of the attack while another 25,000 were injured. 

Cities across Northern California are honoring and remembering the lives lost and those who survived with different events throughout the day.

A veterinary clinic that has spayed and neutered about 20,000 cats and dogs — frequently at a deep discount for the owners — in the last five years while operating out of the Stanislaus Animal Services Agency has been given more time to find a new home.

Valley Pet Care initially posted on social media that it had to leave by Nov. 24. It has been leasing a 1,600-square-foot space on a month-to-month basis, and on Aug. 24 the agency gave its 90-day notice to end the lease.

Third suspect arrested in Modesto armed robbery, police report

The third and final suspect in a Modesto robbery on Monday was identified and arrested Tuesday afternoon, police reported.

Leland Lennear, 26, of Modesto faces charges of robbery, hit-an-run and criminal conspiracy, Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Sharon Bear said.

“The University is currently monitoring the air quality due to smoke from regional wildfires in our area. The campus receives and monitors air quality information from a variety of different sources throughout the day,” the beginning of the warning stated.

Turlock teen last seen in company of sexual assault suspect

Local law enforcement is seeking the public’s help in finding a missing Turlock teenager last seen with a suspected sexual predator.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Emergency Missing Advisory on Tuesday afternoon for 16-year-old Monica Ascensio. The advisory was issued out of concern for her safety.

Teamsters Organize Multiple Red Cross Facilities in California

Fixed collections workers at American Red Cross facilities in Modesto and Turlock, California both voted unanimously to join Teamsters Local 386.

“We are thrilled to welcome Red Cross workers from Modesto and Turlock to the Teamsters,” said Jeff Berdion, Local 386 Secretary-Treasurer. “With two Red Cross facilities joining the Teamsters on the same day, these workers are making it abundantly clear that they have had enough. These men and women play a critical role in the California blood supply chain and deserve the benefits of a strong union contract.”

Get set to ‘Sip and Stroll’

The sidewalks of downtown Turlock are expected to be filled on Saturday evening as the second annual Sip and Stroll will be taking place. The 21+ event allows shoppers to enjoy drinks from local breweries and wineries while exploring the small businesses that make up historic downtown Turlock.

Marissa Miranda, owner of Little Red Door on Main Street, was inspired to bring the event to Turlock after seeing the popularity of it in Santa Cruz, where there is another Little Red Door location. She pitched it to her peers, and they were all on board. So was the community, as all 400 tickets sold out.

UPDATE: Arson suspect identified in Turlock fire that damages duplex, displaces residents.

A fire Sunday night damaged a duplex in Turlock and led to the arrest of one person allegedly connected with the fire, authorities said.

Turlock police said that Santiago Estorga Oheda was arrested on suspicion of arson. Police said Oheda, who is in his early 30s, knew some people who were living in the duplex, including his former girlfriend.

Oheda was in Stanislaus County jail with bail set at $985,000.

Paying homage to Turlock’s Chicano culture through art

It’s no secret that the city of Turlock has a strong Latino community, and one local artist is on a mission to share the rich history through art.

On Wednesday, work officially began on a mural that will adorn the exterior north side wall of a building at 132 S. First St., the former home of Pablo’s Restaurant and the Mexican Kitchen. It just so happens that the man behind the project is Richard Gomez, the grandson of Pablo and family of the former Mexican Kitchen owners.
