Animal Services still taking names to adopt rescued dogs

The Turlock Animal Services has room on their list for any individuals interested in adopting one of the 49 dogs recently rescued from a Turlock home.

Turlock Animal Services started compiling a list on Tuesday of people interested in adopting one of the dogs and by the end of the day the list had 22 names, said Turlock Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Parmley. Animal Services will continue to take names for the list until they reach about 50.

The dogs were all recued from a Turlock home on May 11. The resident told animal services that the dogs were believed to be strays that were found around town and brought back to the residence. Many of the dogs were not spayed or neutered and the pack began to grow as puppies were born.

Visitors to downtown Turlock will soon have another dining option that aims to bring something new to the area, which has become known for its high-quality restaurants in recent years. 

Jerry Powell and Devin Hill are preparing to open Cuts Steakhouse next month in the location that formerly housed Hauck’s Grill. Powell owns downtown bars The Udder Place and Cru as well as Katana Sushi Bar on the other side of Turlock, and Hill oversees operations at all three establishments. The pair began brainstorming plans for a restaurant as co-owners a couple of years ago, Hill said, and the opportunity to overtake the downtown space came up as Hauck’s fell victim to the pandemic.

A tip to the Turlock Police Department’s Animal Services unit led to the discovery of 49 dogs living outdoors at a Turlock residence on Tuesday.

The Turlock resident told animal services the dogs were believed to be strays that were found around town and brought back to the residence. Many of the dogs were not spayed or neutered and the pack began to grow as puppies were born.

The Turlock Municipal Code allows for three dogs at a home. The resident agreed to surrender the 49 dogs and they were collected by animal services on Wednesday.

Drought statistics updated last week show that dry conditions continue to worsen throughout California, with the percentage of the state experiencing the second-highest level of drought up 20 percent from two weeks ago. 

The U.S. Drought Monitor shows that as of May 4 about 73 percent of the state is suffering from the extreme drought, up from 53 percent the week prior. The monitor focuses on broadscale conditions and drought data is communicated using a five-level system: abnormally dry, moderate drought, severe drought, extreme drought and exceptional drought. Just over five percent of the state has experienced exceptional drought conditions over the last two weeks.

Turlock educator recognized as one of best in county

The last nine months have been a school year like no other, from distance learning at home to a campus return filled with COVID-19 safety protocols. Despite these challenges, Crowell Elementary School teacher Ronald Putnam had no difficulty navigating the “new normal” and was recently named a finalist in the Stanislaus County Teachers of the Year awards. 

The Modesto Rotary Club and the Stanislaus County Office of Education named four Teacher of the Year winners from TK-3, 4-6, junior high and high school divisions, recognizing a total of 12 finalists. Each division honored three finalists, who had been nominated by their site principal, from a total of 74 nominations. Of those received, Putnam was selected to represent Crowell in the TK-3 category.

Pitman, Turlock track preparing for final meet

The Turlock and Pitman high school track teams have been running, jumping and throwing to new records all season and will meet one final time next Wednesday.

After last season was cancelled due to the pandemic and this season shortened, THS coach Bergann Hernandez said it has felt great to be back on the track with the team although it was hard to overlook the missed opportunities from 2020 and all of the work that was lost.

Business forecast points to continued economic improvement in 2021

Though the official report won’t be out for a couple more weeks, Dr. Gökçe Soydemir recently presented 2021-2023 San Joaquin Valley Business Forecast’s mid-year update to the Turlock Chamber of Commerce, painting an optimistic picture of recovery for the region as COVID restrictions continue to lift. 

In June 2020, Stanislaus State’s first of two forecasts authored by Foster Farms Endowed Professor of Business Economics Gökçe Soydemir correctly predicted that economic recovery would begin during the second half of 2020 — so long as everyone adhered to COVID-19 precautions and protocols. In his May presentation to the Chamber, Soydemir said that while the recovery did begin in late 2020, it was slowed due to the region’s hesitancy to wear masks as well as the development of new, mutated forms of the virus.

Drivers, cyclists can take steps for bike safety

May is National Bicycle Safety Month, and the Turlock Police Department is encouraging drivers to slow down when passing bicyclists, and asks bicyclists to be visible, predictable, and safe on the road.

“Bicyclists are safest when they act like and are treated the same as drivers,” Turlock Police Sgt. David Hall said. “Please share the road with bicyclists and think of them as your closest friends or family. We all want to get where we need to go safely, whether that is in the car or on a bike.”

Former Bullpup commits to Stanislaus State of Turlock

Ryan Johnson arrived at College of the Sequoias in the fall of 2018 as a football-playing quarterback.

He departs in the spring of 2021 as a basketball-playing guard-forward combo with the opportunity to continue his academic and athletic career at the four-year university level.

The former Hanford High standout has committed to play basketball at NCAA Division II Stanislaus State of Turlock after two standout seasons with the Giants.

"RJ was incredible during his time at COS," Sequoias coach Dallas Jensen said. "Being able to see his growth and maturation as a player, student and person was amazing. I'm beyond proud of him for his accomplishments on and off the floor."
