Student hit by car near Turlock’s Pitman High School

A student was left with minor injuries after being hit by a car in Turlock Monday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Turlock Police Department said the student was hit by a car near Pitman High School just before 3:30 p.m.

The student was taken to a hospital as a precaution.

Fundraiser to benefit Turlock native struck by car at college campus

What was thought to be a regular day of attending classes at Cal Poly Humboldt on Sept. 1 turned into a life-threatening situation for Madelyn Vink, a Turlock native and Pitman High alumnus. 

The senior studying religious studies and sociology was hit by a vehicle on campus at the intersection of Rossow and Harpst in Arcata, California.

Schools employee accused of assaulting former student who was too intoxicated to stop attack

A school district employee is accused of sexually assaulting a former student who was too intoxicated to stop the attack, according to the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.

The incident took place on the night of July 23, and was reported to authorities the following day, the Sheriff's Office reported.

A student was in critical condition after being pulled late Friday from the Turlock High School swimming pool, the district said.

The student was part of a group that entered the locked swimming complex about 11:30 p.m., said an email Saturday from Marie Russell, director of communications for the Turlock Unified School District.

Proposed legislation would increase state financial aid for California private college students

A pending California Senate bill would increase the amount of state financial aid available to California residents studying at the 5Cs and other private colleges, though the amount of aid students receive may not change at institutions that already meet one hundred percent of financial need.

California’s A and B “Cal Grants” are the state’s main form of financial aid to low- and middle-income students, offering competitive grants to students at community colleges, state schools (the California State University system and the University of California system) and private schools that meet student loan default rate and graduation rate requirements.

The Cal Grant A helps pay for tuition and fees for educational programs that are at least two academic years long, while the Cal Grant B acts as a living and education-related expenses stipend for educational programs at least one year long.

Teen stabbed at Turlock High

A Turlock High School student was critically injured in a stabbing on campus, carried out by another student, who is now in custody, according to the Turlock Police Department.

The male victim, whose age is unknown, was taken by air ambulance to a trauma center with multiple stab wounds. The injuries were considered life-threatening, according to the police department.

Gun found in Pitman student’s backpack

A student was placed under arrest Tuesday afternoon at Pitman High School after a handgun was found in the student's backpack.

The student was initially called to the Pitman High School Dean's office around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday after information surfaced that the student might be in possession of a controlled substance, according to the Turlock Unified School District.

Local students set to graduate from Stanislaus State

TURLOCK – Stanislaus State University will recognize more than 3,000 candidates for graduation as a part of the class of 2020. Graduates will be awarded bachelor’s, master’s, credentials and doctorate degrees. The following local students are set to earn degrees:

Philip Hanson of Murrieta has earned bachelor’s degree in history.

Gabriela Rosas-Richardson of Murrieta will graduate summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in cognitive studies.

Morgan Castaing of Menifee has earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

Deadly U.S. drone strike prompts student-led anti-war march, rally in Modesto

About 40 people joined in a student-organized march and rally Sunday afternoon in protest of the U.S. drone strike Friday that killed Iran’s most powerful general.

Carrying signs with messages including “No Iran war” and “End colonial occupation,” the crowd — mostly college age, but also including the middle aged, seniors and children — took a roundabout path from Graceada Park to Tenth Street Plaza. The marchers went northeast on L Street, southwest on Ninth past the bus depot, then northeast on I before turning onto 10th and ending at the plaza.
