PAL fundraiser set to return to Turlock Sports Park

For the second time this year, the Turlock Sports Park will be hosting a fundraiser in support of Turlock’s Police Activities League (PAL), the non-profit organization with the primary goal of promoting a constructive relationship between law enforcement and the youth of Turlock.

Like in May, the Turlock Sports Park will be putting on a three-day, multi-sport camp that allows children to be trained and cheered on by members of local law enforcement.

The Turlock High football team announced its presence early in Friday night’s 51-24 win over Gregori High, letting the entire Central California Athletic Conference know that its 0-5 nonleague record wasn’t an indication of what the next five games could be.

The Bulldogs earned their first win this season and their first victory since their historic upset of then-unbeaten St. Mary’s-Stockton in the 2022 Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. In its first five games, Turlock played two of the top 5 teams in the Sacramento area, two top schools in the Fresno area and a historically powerful Bay Area program.

Good morning, fellow Escapists. Six hours up the coast from Los Angeles churns the premier big wave surf break in the continental United States. Once a secret held by just a few locals, Mavericks is serious stuff: From October through March, waves can break at 10 feet, 15 feet and even higher.

Over the years, it has claimed the lives of surfing legends such as Mark Foo and Sion Milosky. “It will just add to the lore and legend of this spot,” a local surf shop owner said of Foo’s tragic death while speaking to The Times in 1994. Today, Mavericks is known around the world as a destination for experienced big wave surfers and those interested in watching the beauty and brutality of the ocean from afar.

But in nearby Half Moon Bay, it’s an entirely different story.

The coastal town in San Mateo County is home to beaches that are ideal for beginners — and plenty of surf instructors happy to teach newcomers the ropes, just a few miles from the fearsome waves of Mavericks.

Ella Catalano-Dockins, 20, is one of those instructors. A surfer since age 10, she owns and operates Blue Swell Surf School with her younger sister and mother. The school offers lessons for surfers of all skill levels, as well as surf camps and walking tours of the coastline, where guests can easily spot marine wildlife.

The Turlock Christian baseball team kept the good times rolling as they took down the Mendota Aztecs in the opening game of the Division V CIF Northern California Regional playoffs. The Eagles once again saw a stellar pitching performance from junior Gavin Farinha, who tossed six shutout frames.

Farinha dominating for TC is nothing new to the rest of the team, but a major difference in Tuesday night’s contest was run support. After scoring one run in the section championship game, the Eagles offense exploded to score six against Mendota.

When the Sac-Joaquin Section released its boys volleyball playoff brackets on April 29, there were schools from Lodi, Stockton, Ripon and many different cities around Sacramento.

But none from Modesto.

In the state of California, boys volleyball participation has increased every year from 2010-2019 according to the National Federation of State High School Associations, gaining the most steam in Southern California and near the Bay Area.

Two schools in Modesto have made their mark by starting teams this year: Davis High School and Central Catholic High School. The teams were started in an attempt to provide an extra sport for boys in the spring, and grow boys volleyball in the area.

CHS girls soccer take second in league

Ceres High’s girls soccer team ended the 2020-21 season on a positive note.

The Bulldogs cruised to a 9-1 win against host Los Banos on May 26.

“I’m proud of everything we accomplished,” said Jackie Ruiz, who contributed at goalkeeper and forward during her final season at Ceres High. “I think we did a pretty good job from where we started. It was basically a brand-new team. We only had five returning starters.”
