Stanislaus Gets $13 Million More for Delayed ACE Rail Line. Another Commute Option Is Here

New state grants will help expand the Altamont Corridor Express into Stanislaus County, as well as a vanpool program already serving commuters.

The allocations, totaling $16. 2 million, were finalized Dec. 13 by the Stanislaus Council of Governments. It is made up of county supervisors and city council members and oversees transportation funding.

At about 11:32pm Friday night, Turlock Police responded to a traffic hazard at W. Monte Vista Avenue and N. Golden State Boulevard, for a vehicle stuck on the railroad tracks.

Bicyclist Dies After Being Hit by Train in Turlock

A bicyclist died after being hit by a train in Turlock, the Turlock Police Department said Thursday.

The crash happened Wednesday night around 8 p.m. on East Main Street and the railroad tracks. 

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man who had been hit from behind as he biked across the railroad tracks while the railroad arms were down. The man was taken to a hospital where he died.

ACE Rail Expansion Runs Late, Just as Modesto Readies Its Historic Downtown Depot

The Altamont Corridor Express expects a two-year delay in its expansion into Stanislaus and Sacramento counties.

The first trains will not run until late 2026 under the latest timeline from ACE management. It attributed the delay in part to a complex review process by Union Pacific Railroad, which runs freight trains on the same tracks.

A spokeswoman for UP said it is working with ACE to ensure that the expansion provides for safe and reliable service.

OMAHA — Federal regulators have ordered Union Pacific railroad to make sure a livestock producer gets the grain it needs in California to prevent millions of chickens and hundreds of thousands of cattle from starving.

The U.S. Surface Transportation Board told the railroad it must improve service to Foster Farms to keep it from running out of feed for livestock it raises.

Turlock Commuter Train Extension Gets Another $57 Million. When Will Cars Start Rolling?

The state has kicked in another $57 million to help the Altamont Corridor Express reach Turlock.

Train service would start there by 2027 under the latest timeline for expanding the line, which now runs on weekdays between Stockton and San Jose.

Turlock is part of a southern branch that will start with stations by 2024 in Manteca, Ripon, Modesto and Ceres. The branch will have stops as well in Livingston and Merced by 2029. ACE also is expanding north, with stations serving Lodi, Elk Grove and four Sacramento locations by 2024.

ACE Service to Turlock Gets Funding

Altamont Corridor Express commuter rail service is moving farther down the line to Turlock.

The San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission has been awarded $57 million by the State of California to extend ACE service from Ceres to Turlock.

Funding from the Senate Bill 1 deal in 2017 to increase the state gas tax including money to extend ACE service from Ceres to Sacramento is already in place with at least one train added to go from Ceres to San Jose.

That service will be up and running in 2023.

Ultimately, ACE will be extended to Merced to connect with the California High Speed Rail system.

After a decade of cost, schedule, technical, regulatory, personnel and legal problems, the California high speed rail project will be getting an inspector general soon as part of a deal between Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Legislature.

The new investigative position is intended to intensify oversight and improve performance of the $105 billion railroad project. Enthusiasm for the change is high, but whether it will fix everything is uncertain, even among state leaders.

“There is nothing but problems on the project,” said Speaker Anthony Rendon, a Lakewood Democrat. “The inspector general provides oversight and some sense of what is going on with management. That has been missing for a long time.”

But will it work?

“We don’t know,” Rendon said. “We need to be vigilant. The IG will provide what we need to carry that out.”

81-Year-Old Driver Struck, Killed by Train in Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. — An 81-year-old man died after the car he was driving was hit by a train in Turlock Monday afternoon.

According to the Turlock Police Department, the deadly crash happened at the Monte Vista and Golden State railroad crossing just after 1:45 p.m. When officers arrived, they found a blue Subaru which had been hit by a train. The 81-year-old man driving the Subaru was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. His identity has not been released.

Officers believe the man was driving southbound on Golden State and attempted to turn onto Monte Vista through the railroad crossing when his car collided with the oncoming train. 

All train crossing signals, warning lights and crossing arms were working properly before the crash occurred.

ACE Train Still Targeted to Reach Ceres by 2022

The planned Ceres station for the Altamont Corridor Express (ACE) train is now in its preliminary design stage.

City Manager Tom Westbrook said he was updated recently by Dan Leavett, manager of Regional Initiatives for the San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission.

“They said that they would be contacting me in the next couple of weeks to a month to sit down and talk about the preliminary design,” said Westbrook. “Once I have that I’ll probably just shoot it in front of the council so that they can see what that is going to look like.”

Talk of the ACE train line being extended to Modesto, Ceres, Turlock and ultimately Merced has been taking place since 2014. Currently the closest ACE train access to Ceres is the Manteca/Lathrop station although there are stations in Stockton and Tracy. The ACE extension to Ceres looked more promising after the passage of Measure L, the half-cent sales tax hike in Stanislaus County, and the state’s passage of SB 1. Key in passing the $52 billion transportation plan, Senate Bill 1, was then state Senator Anthony Cannella who wrestled a pledge of $400 million to the ACE project extension to Merced.
