L.A. County health officials warn of measles exposure at Westside shops

in Local Roundup

Los Angeles County officials warned Thursday that a county resident with measles may have exposed others at several shops on the Westside.

Officials identified businesses in Venice, Brentwood and Santa Monica that the infected person visited, along with a coffee shop in downtown L.A., over a three-day period last week.

The news comes as the country grapples with its worst measles outbreak in decades. As of July 21, 1,148 people nationwide had been diagnosed with measles this year, compared with 372 people in all 2018.

Considered one of the most contagious diseases in the world, measles spreads through coughing and sneezing, but can linger in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the room.

There have been 61 recorded cases of measles in California this year so far. Officials urge anyone who has not been vaccinated to get immunized; most people who have gotten measles this year were not immunized.

California seizes $30 million in black market cannabis from illegal pot shops

in Local Roundup

California authorities have tripled the number of raids on unlicensed cannabis shops in the last year and seized $30 million in pot products, but legal industry leaders say enforcement is still inadequate to break the dominance of the black market in the state.

In 2018, the first year of licensing, the state Bureau of Cannabis Control worked with local law enforcement to serve six search warrants on unlicensed pot shops and seized some 1,594 pounds of cannabis worth $13.5 million.

During the first six months of this year, the bureau served 19 search warrants on unlicensed sellers, confiscating more than 2,500 pounds of illegal marijuana products with a retail value of $16.5 million, according to data released last week. The state has also seized $219,874 in cash from illegal pot shops.

CA ending indoor masking requirement for vaccinated people Wednesday; here’s what to know

California is ending the indoor masking requirement for vaccinated people on Wednesday as the state sees declining COVID-19 case rates and hospitalization numbers.

The statewide indoor masking requirement expires Tuesday, moving the state back to previous guidance that mandates face coverings only for unvaccinated people in all indoor public settings, like shops, gyms, bars and movie theaters.

Residential development rules 2021, will carry into 2022

in Community

Turlock saw plenty of new development in 2021, from new coffee shops to additional housing. As the City’s Planning Division looks ahead to 2022, construction set to take place in the new year will provide a boost to the economy through more people and goods.

The community kicked off this year by welcoming a new building in the Turlock Town Center, which currently houses Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Impact Nutrition. Dutch Bros Coffee constructed and opened its second Turlock location in the center this year as well. Just across the roadway on the corner of North Golden State Boulevard and East Canal Drive, the city’s eighth standalone Starbucks was also constructed and opened in 2021.

The new developments on the south end of town in 2021 were a change from the usual north end development seen around Monte Vista Crossings in recent years — a result of new ownership in the Turlock Town Center which has revitalized the space and attracted plenty of new businesses.

“That new owner has really taken a proactive approach in trying to move tenants, find new tenants and really revitalize that center,” Deputy Director of Development Services and Planning Manager Katie Quintero said. “I think that really has spurred some development interest in that area.”

Farm country gears up for tourism return

in Local Roundup

Pandemic cabin fever continues to drive people out to the country, and farmers who welcome agritourism activities say they expect the trend will hold, with farms becoming a go-to destination.

Last year saw the cancellation of many farm festivals, tours and workshops, some of which went virtual or were greatly scaled back. More of these events have returned this year with some modifications. Wineries, which shuttered tasting rooms last year, have reopened. U-pick farms and farm stands have become “very popular,” even in pandemic months of 2020, said Rachael Callahan, agritourism coordinator at the University of California, Davis.

“This year, with the return of larger on-farm gatherings and other agritourism, people are eager to get outside, engage with their community and connect with their local farmers and ranchers,” she said.
