Atwater police identify man and woman found shot to death inside vehicle

Authorities have identified a man and woman who were shot and killed in Atwater on Monday night as Evangelina Ybarra, 42, and Ramon Lopez, 41, both of Livingston, according to the Atwater Police Department.

Atwater Police officers responded to multiple reports of shots fired at about 10:30 p.m. Monday in a parking lot in the 2500 block of Schaffer Road near Fortuna Avenue . When officers arrived on the scene they found Ybarra and Lopez inside a vehicle. Both had been shot multiple times and were pronounced dead at the scene.

Fundraising Goal Exceeded By Relay For Life Teams

With more than $130,000 raised prior to the actual 24-hour Relay For Life this past weekend at John Thurman Field in Modesto, the 2023 event far surpassed its $150,000 fundraising goal.

By the time the closing ceremony was staged on Sunday, Oct. 1, teams involved in the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser had gone over $161,000, with more donations still anticipated. At press time, the total had surpassed $166,000. Top fundraising team was Conagra Oakdale Fights Back, with the Oakdale team bringing in more than $25,000. Conagra also served as the presenting sponsor for 2023.

Water river coming to your tap next month

A monumental project to bring treated water from the Tuolumne River to Ceres taps will be realized next month and the difference in taste, smell and color may be noticeable.

Starting in November, gradually water coming from taps in Ceres and Turlock will be blended with ground and water pumped and filtered from the Tuolumne River.

A 44-year-old man was shot and killed in Modesto Saturday night, police said.

Morse West, also known as Holly, was shot near Martin and Clayton avenues. He was from Modesto.

Prep football roundup: Turlock, 10 other local teams earn Week 7 league wins

The Turlock High football team announced its presence early in Friday night’s 51-24 win over Gregori High, letting the entire Central California Athletic Conference know that its 0-5 nonleague record wasn’t an indication of what the next five games could be.

The Bulldogs earned their first win this season and their first victory since their historic upset of then-unbeaten St. Mary’s-Stockton in the 2022 Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. In its first five games, Turlock played two of the top 5 teams in the Sacramento area, two top schools in the Fresno area and a historically powerful Bay Area program.

Calif. couple hungry for tacos wins $1 million with lottery ticket

California couple who stopped to get tacos for dinner became instant millionaires after buying a winning Lottery Scratchers ticket.

Tim Dynes said his wife wanted tacos after they returned from an overseas trip, so they stopped at their favorite taco truck in Patterson, about 85 miles south of Sacramento. Dynes said he usually goes to the gas station mini-mart across the truck to buy a Lottery Scratchers ticket and he did just that.

Police said the victim is an adult male who was found near Martin and Clayton Avenues.

Turlock, CA – Injuries in Vehicle Collision on W Main St, Bystrum Rd

A collision resulting in injuries occurred on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at the intersection of W Main St and Bystrum Rd. At approximately 11:47 a.m., a red truck and a semi-truck collided.

By 11:53 a.m., the issue escalated from an unknown injury status to emergency services being dispatched.

Turlock Moms Club celebrates year of philanthropy and fun

A year is officially in the books for the Turlock Moms Club, a 503(c) nonprofit whose mission is to provide a supportive network for local moms and fun activities for children through events and community service.

On Sunday, the club celebrated their year of work and looked towards their second year with their annual Fall Festival. The event, which included children's activities like gardening and face painting, offered an opportunity for community members to learn more about the club and their efforts.
