Stanislaus County coroner identifies three men who died over Christmas weekend

The identities of three people reported dead by The Bee over Christmas weekend have been released by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

The names, ages and places of residence are withheld by the coroner until next-of-kin is notified. In the two subsequent cases, this has happened.

A high-speed chase in Stanislaus County recently ended dramatically with law enforcement deploying a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) maneuver to stop a fleeing suspect's vehicle. The pursuit, which took place late on a Tuesday morning, came to a close near Yosemite Boulevard and Kerr Avenue, not far from Modesto's heart. The suspect in question, 31-year-old Modesto resident Roberto Daniel Acosta, faced a harrowing conclusion to the chase when his vehicle crashed into a fence.

Christmas Eve fight leads to gunshots: Two critically wounded in tragic holiday altercation

In the early hours of December 24, 2023, at approximately 9:30 a.m., Modesto Police Patrol Officers responded to a distressing report of a shooting in the vicinity of Prescott and Mt Vernon.

A critical situation left two adults with gunshot wounds.

Shows haul in over $2M for charity in 2023

It was somewhere around 2011 when veteran Iowa trucker Eldon “Eldie” Jaeger woke up with an idea. “We had lost our daughter Brenda to cancer. She fought it for fourteen and a half years. All I could think was if someone before had not done something for cancer, we wouldn't have had her nearly that long." 

What if he could put together a nice custom truck? What if he took that truck around the country and sold raffle tickets on it for cancer research?

Stanislaus gets $13 million more for delayed ACE rail line. Another commute option is here

New state grants will help expand the Altamont Corridor Express into Stanislaus County, as well as a vanpool program already serving commuters.

The allocations, totaling $16. 2 million, were finalized Dec. 13 by the Stanislaus Council of Governments. It is made up of county supervisors and city council members and oversees transportation funding.

Local kids get behind-the-scenes look at one of Santa’s workshops, better known as an Amazon fulfillment center

Just before the start of the holiday rush, five employees at the Fulkerth Road facility had the opportunity to bring their kids — seven in all — into the plant and give them a firsthand look at how their parents help Santa fulfill his yearly duties.

Volunteers sought for annual homeless count

Every winter volunteers scour Turlock helping officials to get a physical census of the number of homeless individuals and families in the city as part of a countywide point-in-time count.

The annual count data helps determine the scope of homelessness in each city and the county as a whole, define existing resources, and identify any gaps in services. The Stanislaus Community System of Care, which oversees the count, is looking for a few hundred local volunteers to aid in this effort.

Stanislaus bus system has $64 million for switch to hydrogen. How does this help climate?

Stanislaus County’s main bus system would run on hydrogen under a plan that just got a $47.5 million boost.

That fuel would allow the Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority to meet a state mandate for zero emissions by 2040. The current buses, mostly diesel, pollute local air and contribute to global climate change.
