THE BEAUTIFUL BLOG Bay Area Soccer: SF City and SF Glens end seasons

in Local Roundup/Sports

On Friday night, Orange County SC U23 defeated SF City FC 3-1 in City’s final match of the season. With the result, City will finish in sixth place in USL League Two’s Southwest Division, a disappointing result for a club that had an abundance of talented players but was prone to the kind of defensive lapses that caused them to give up 39 goals this season, most in the eight-team division.

The match was decided in the first ten minutes. Excellent ball movement led to Orange County’s 7th-minute goal.

Goalkeeper Paulo Guerin played a long ball into City’s half. After two passes, Devin Cornejo sent in a cross from the right side that Miguel Berry headed past a leaping Marcus Lau.

How American policy has separated refugee families

in Local Roundup

When Wajed al-Khalifa and her family arrived in the U.S. as refugees in 2015, everything about America seemed foreign. They were resettled to Turlock, California, a rural city about two hours east of San Francisco. Yet it wasn't long before they started hitting milestones.

Khalifa and her husband, Gasem al-Hamad, got driver's licenses. Their four kids excelled in school, quickly overcoming barriers such as English-language instruction and a new education system. It was a big change after fleeing war in Syria, living in limbo in Jordan for more than two years, and then being accepted to resettle in the U.S. as refugees.

California Today: How Polluted Is Your Beach? Here Are the 10 Worst

in Environment/Local Roundup

It’s supposed to be hot this weekend across Southern California, which means you may be considering a trip to your favorite beach.

But before you plunge into the water, you might consult the environmental advocacy group Heal the Bay’s Beach Report Card, which evaluates water quality and pollution levels at 500 of the state’s beaches.

Live updates: Will off-roaders be banned from Oceano Dunes? Decision day is here

in Local Roundup

While state commissioners said they do not believe off-road vehicles on the beach at the Oceano Dunes is compatible with California’s Coastal Act, they decided that activity can continue as is at the beach for now. But the Coastal Commission said it needs to see meaningful change from State Parks to address serious environmental and public health effects of riding in the popular park by next year.

New local car shows add to enjoyable summer season

in Local Roundup

One of the many benefits of summer is its time for car shows. We’ve been blessed with a number of fine showings of late. It’s almost an “embarrassment of riches” but there’s plenty to see and do now in the vintage vehicle realm.

We’ll begin with Atwater, then take in a delightful Thursday night cruise-in at a winery on the outskirts of Merced and finish off with a car show between Modesto and Oakdale. So this is a summer triple-header of sorts.

I’m very glad the first-ever Historic Downtown Atwater Summer Car Show on June 22 was an unqualified success. Somewhere between 150 and 200 old cars and trucks were lined up along Broadway from about Second Street almost to Winton Way, with the overflow spilling over to the adjoining parking lots.

Agricultural water agencies refine efficiency plans

in Food/Local Roundup

Agricultural water suppliers must develop annual water budgets and drought plans that meet requirements of recently enacted legislation, and are meeting with state officials to comply with the updated law—a process that could ultimately affect water costs for California farmers and ranchers.

California Farm Bureau Federation Director of Water Resources Danny Merkley said the process stems from 2009 law, and updates passed last year, which require the state Department of Water Resources to consult with agricultural stakeholders to quantify water-use efficiency.

Car dealership owner proposes gaming

in Local Roundup

SELMA – Long-time car dealership owner Dwight Nelson has an idea he thinks will not only add an estimated 100 new jobs to Selma, but could also bring in thousands of dollars in taxes for the city’s general fund.

At the June 17 Selma City Council meeting, Nelson shared his idea to convert 4,000 square feet of banquet facilities of his Spike N’ Rail Restaurant into gaming rooms, as usage of them has declined over the years, he said.
