Downtown Turlock Prepares for Holiday Events

in Arts & Entertainment/Event News

The streets of downtown Turlock will soon be busy with holiday fun as business owners and the community prepare for tricks, treats and plenty of Christmas cheer thanks to the return of several beloved events.

A sense of normalcy will return to Main Street in the coming weeks as the Christmas Parade and Festival of Lights make triumphant returns after being cancelled last year due to the pandemic. This year, however, both celebrations will look a bit different than community members are used to.

“I want to thank everyone for coming and supporting our team on this festive day. Hopefully the team has their head game, and they can out victorious. Victory’s a sweet a thing,” said former Turlock High football player David Yonan.

Gospel Mission’s ‘Top Chef’ Fundraiser Returns

in Event News/Food & Drink

Turlock residents are invited to taste — and critique — some of the best cuisine their favorite local food trucks have to offer, and all for a good cause.

Turlock Gospel Mission’s second annual Turlock Top Chef competition is set to be held later this month, bringing back a new tradition which started successfully in 2019, but was put on halt last year due to the pandemic. This time, instead of four of the city’s top culinary masters putting their knives to the test, four of the area’s most popular food trucks will face off while feeding the masses.

Stanislaus County Fair Delivers on Opening Day

in Event News

Corn dogs, cows and crowds made their way back to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock on Friday for opening day of the fair’s Summer of Fun — a different approach to one of the area’s most popular events after a year of closures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While this year’s Stanislaus County Fair is taking place without rides or exhibits, CEO Matt Cranford said the organization crammed as much fun as they could into three weekends featuring favorite fair foods, pop-up shops, FoodMaxx Arena events and livestock shows. After COVID restrictions kept Cranford and company guessing for months, they were finally able to begin planning once guidelines were relaxed and had just six weeks to do so, he said.

Illegal Fireworks Could Prove Costly in Turlock

in Event News

Getting caught setting off an illegal firework this holiday in Turlock could be akin to taking a $100 bill and setting it on fire.

A fine for setting an illegal firework can start at $100 and can go up to $500, said Turlock Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jason Bernard. Each violation carries a fine, so a person can get multiple violations depending on the circumstances, including if the person is a repeat offender.

It’s questionable, however, if the fines are enough of a deterrent because over the last few weeks, and especially the last couple of days, illegal fireworks have been setting the night sky aglow all over Turlock. Between Tuesday and Thursday, the Turlock Police Department logged 19 calls for fireworks violations and those are just the ones that were reported.

No Fireworks, Parade in Turlock for Independence Day

in Event News

As staffing woes and the pandemic continue to affect both the City of Turlock as well as local businesses, there will be no 4th of July fireworks show or downtown parade yet again this year.

While COVID-19 put a stop to the Annual 4th of July Parade and Car Show last summer, event sponsor Patrick Jensen of Paul’s Glass Co. said the event just wasn’t possible again this year as his staff dwindles in the midst of an employment shortage. Jensen typically partners with the Turlock Downtown Property Owners Association in order to host the downtown parade, but the organization is also shorthanded and currently without a leader as it looks to hire a new director.

Portuguese Festival Returning to Turlock

in Event News/Arts & Entertainment

After a successful inaugural event in 2019, the San Joaquin Valley Portuguese Festival will return to Turlock this summer following a year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The Carlos Vieira Foundation hosted the first SJVPF in April 2019 and it was a huge success, with nearly 15,000 community members from Turlock and beyond making their way out to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds to enjoy Portuguese food, dancing, music and entertainment. The festival not only allows people of all backgrounds to discover what Portuguese culture has to offer, but also raises money for the CVF’s Race for Autism campaign in order to help Central Valley families who have children living with autism.

Ceres Police Gear up to Fight Illegal Fireworks

in Event News

The loud pops of illegal firecrackers and the occasional launching of illegal aerial fireworks has already begun and yet the Fourth of July holiday season is still weeks away. But Ceres Police are drumming up a public relations campaign in hopes of minimizing community disturbances from anything that explodes or leaves the ground.

Earlier this year the Ceres City Council handed police another tool to crackdown on possession and/or detonation of illegal firework devices – an increase in the fine from $1,000 to $2,500 per violation.

“If you are found to be igniting the fireworks, or allowing it to happen from your home, you will be issued a citation,” said Ceres Police Department spokesman Sgt. Keith Griebel.
