Turlock Community Theatre to launch comeback with help of federal grant

in Entertainment

It was announced this week that the Turlock Community Theatre was one of six venues throughout the Central Valley to receive federal COVID funding in order to help keep its doors open.

After pushing the Biden administration to speed up the delivery of critical grants to local stages, bars, movie theaters, museums and concert halls last month, Rep. Josh Harder on Monday said that over $3.8 million had been distributed to Valley businesses and nonprofits through the Shuttered Venue Operator Grant program.

“...I can’t wait to sit down for a performance and go to a movie this summer, and I’m glad our venues will be reopening with the resources they deserve,” Harder said in a statement.

National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships.

SPLASHING BACK TO NORMAL

in Entertainment/News

Families looking to beat the heatwave this week can cool off at the City of Turlock’s two aquatic playgrounds, which are open once more after the pandemic shut them down last summer. Turlock’s public pools are still closed to recreational swimmers due to COVID-19, though swim lessons are being hosted at Pitman High School.

Turlock resident Aiden Struve and his family were at the Columbia Water Spray Park on Tuesday afternoon, much to his delight. Last year was the first time Struve wasn’t able to go to the spray park, he said, and he was overjoyed to be back under his favorite feature of the playground: the water-spilling coconuts.

Turlock woman catches the eyes, ears of American Idol judges

in Entertainment

TURLOCK, Calif. — She is normally skeptical of auditions for voice competitions, partly due to fear of rejection, which is why she believes her husband didn't ask before submitting her name for American Idol.

Ashlyn Ruder, an American Idol contestant from Turlock, told ABC10 she called her husband screaming after learning she would be on the reality show.

"That excitement hasn't happened for a really long time, especially because COVID has been happening and everything else in the world is kind of closed," Ruder said.

After hearing Ruder perform a song about how proud she is of her dad being sober going on three years on the show, Lionel Richie gave her advice she won't forget.

"He said, 'I've been in this business for a really long time and the one thing that never goes out of style is talking about love and sharing love through music," Ruder said.

Turlock native to appear on ‘American Idol’

in Entertainment

Growing up, Turlock native Ashlyn Ruder could turn anything into a stage. From her grandmother’s bed where she’d belt out “The Sound of Music” to the tailgate of her dad’s truck performing the songs she had written, music has always served as a way for the 22-year old to express herself.

On Sunday, Ruder will sing on one of the world’s biggest stages when she appears on the newest episode of “American Idol” in its 19th season.

“Music has been a pastime of mine my entire life. I was always doing something music related, and that’s just how it was for me growing up,” Ruder said. “Now, it’s become a dream that’s real and it’s a career. It’s crazy.”

Ruder was born and raised in Turlock and graduated from Turlock Christian in 2017. During her younger years, she kept busy by performing in her church’s worship band and even recorded an album at age 13. That endeavor never came to be — producers saw Ruder as a pop star, while her heart was with country music — and it would be almost a decade until the singer got her big break.

Turlock song receives professional treatment

in Entertainment/People

Turlock is a special place for many of its residents, but for the first time in its 112-year history the city’s virtues have been extolled in song.

When Turlock Mayor Amy Bublak approached U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Jeremy Levens several months ago about using his musical talents to create a song for her State of the City address, Levens said the project sounded like fun.

Levens sings and plays guitar at his local church and this wasn’t the first time he’s written a song. He started the Turlock song project by finding the perfect rhythm. Once he had the sound he was looking for, he started writing lyrics about the different aspects that make up Turlock, including:
