Woman arrested on theft and drug charges after being recognized by loss prevention Thursday evening

On Thursday, July 6th, 2023, at 7:54 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported suspicious person at Kohl’s, 2751 Countryside Dr, Turlock, who loss prevention recognized as a known shoplifter and believed to be shoplifting again.

As officers were responding, they were informed that loss prevention had identified the woman as Anatasia Laughlin, 25, of Modesto.

Stanislaus County Fair readies for opening night on Friday

One week before the opening of the 2023 Stanislaus County Fair and new Fair CEO Kimberly Williams said that everything is running smoothly.

While this will be Williams’ first Fair season as CEO, she has spent the past 10 years as operations manager and then another eight years at various positions at the Stanislaus County Fair, so she is a veteran of the hustle and bustle that goes into getting the fairgrounds ready to welcome the more than 200,000 visitors expected during the Fair’s 10-day run.

Healthcare workers plan pickets at Tenet Healthcare centers starting July 11

Healthcare workers plan on picketing outside of 12 Tenet Healthcare facilities to call for additional support in their workplace beginning on Jul. 11.

Two of those centers are in our local area including Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in San Luis Obispo and Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.

Local unemployment rates in Stanislaus County remain stagnant

The State of California’s Employee Development Department released its month labor report this week, and the statistics show that unemployment rates in the region had little movement during the month of May. It comes as California and the United States have seen slight rises in unemployment rates.

Modesto Fire crews respond to 274 calls for service in 24 hours

The Fourth of July had Modesto fire crews running from Modesto and Ceres to Salida and Oakdale.

According to the Modesto Fire Department, crews responded to 274 calls for service between 7 a.m. on July 4 to 7 a.m. on July 5. 

The calls for service included 65 fires, eight structure/building fires, 41 vegetation fires and 16 trash fires.

2 people shot multiple times in Merced, police say

Missing teen found dead in Yosemite Lake, deputies say

The search for a teen who went missing at Lake Yosemite has come to an end Tuesday evening after they were found dead, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say around 4:17 p.m. they were notified of a missing teenager who was last seen swimming in the water at the pier of the lake.

Man dies after successful suicide attempt with gun Saturday evening

On Saturday, July 1st, 2023, at 7:58 pm, the Turlock Police Department, Stanislaus State Police Department, Turlock Fire Department, and American Medical Response were dispatched to a reported suicidal person at a residence in the 2700 block of Ball Ct, Turlock, who had just shot himself after being involved in a disturbance with his girlfriend.

Man lying down in the roadway arrested on PRCS flash Friday night

On Friday, June 30th, 2023, at 11:29 pm, the Turlock Police Department was dispatched to a reported disturbance near the intersection of E Hawkeye Ave and Colorado Ave, Turlock, for a man walking down the middle of the street taking his clothes off and swinging his belt and hands around.

When officers arrived in the area, they found and contacted Ismael Hernandez, 36, of Turlock, who was lying down in the roadway in front of a residence in the 1500 block of E Hawkeye Ave.

Turlock woman loses everything in apartment fire while caring for grandchildren

For Patricia Escalante, caring for her grandchildren is nothing new. But after a tragic apartment fire in Turlock took everything they had, she's trying to stay strong while in very unfamiliar territory.

"It ruined everything destroyed everything. We were lucky to get out alive," said Escalante.

Escalante said she noticed the fire coming from her granddaughter's room and felt the heat radiating off the floor.
