California’s Sonoma Wine Country Reckons with Wildfire Damage to Tourism Economy

in Business & Economy/Environment

SONOMA, Calif. — As ash settles from the recent wildfires in one of the world’s most recognizable wine regions, the battle-tested vintners now face another problem – discouraged tourists.

The wildfires in California’s Sonoma County are among the largest and most intense in the state’s history. Fortunately for the wineries, the fires came at the close of the harvest this year and most of the grapes were saved. But that might not matter so much.

“The real damage from the fires isn’t on the harvest, it’s on the economy,” said Rob McMillan, executive vice president and founder of Silicon Valley Bank’s wine division. “From a tourism standpoint, people will choose not to come to the vineyards.”

Got a Weird Text? A Telecom Vendor Says It’s to Blame

in Business & Economy

If you woke up to a weird text that seemed totally out of place, you aren’t alone. A mysterious wave of missives swept America’s phones overnight, delivering confusing messages from friends, family and the occasional ex.

Friends who hadn’t talked to each other in months were jolted into chatting. Others briefly panicked.

A telecom vendor called Syniverse said a server failed on Feb. 14, and nearly messages from multiple carriers didn’t go through. When that server was reactivated Thursday, those messages got sent.

Syniverse initially estimated about 170,000 messages, but the company now says it’s higher, without saying how many. Syniverse said it is reviewing internal procedures so this doesn’t happen again. Syniverse typically deletes messages that don’t go through.

Why so Few Places to Live in Modesto? A Clue. It Has to Do with Raging Economy

in Business & Economy

Job growth is a leading indicator of economic recovery.

But are you living the dream if a large percentage of your paycheck goes to housing costs, or a shabby apartment in Modesto or Turlock is all you can afford>

In cities across the country, housing construction has not kept up with a long streak of job growth that followed the terrible recession of 2008 and 2009, according to a study by Apartment List, an online apartment-finding service.

In the Modesto area, the economy added 18,324 jobs between 2008 and 2018 or 3.4 jobs per 1,000 residents. During the same time period, less than 1 permit for housing construction was issued per 1,000 residents. The study concluded that 4.2 jobs were created here for every building permit issued for housing.

Balanced Budget First Step in Earning Back Your Trust

in Business & Economy

On May 24, we started the discussion with Turlock stakeholders, including our residents and taxpayers, on the need to balance our budget, do business differently and put Turlock back on sound fiscal ground.

Our immediate job was to stop deficit spending. City Manager Lawton and his staff launched an open budget discussion process on how best to deliver essential City services in the most economical manner.

Initial requests from City Department heads would have required $4.1 million in deficit spending. To most people, spending more money than they have is a foreign concept. In our City, deficit spending unfortunately has been common practice in recent years. No more.
