Deadly U.S. drone strike prompts student-led anti-war march, rally in Modesto

About 40 people joined in a student-organized march and rally Sunday afternoon in protest of the U.S. drone strike Friday that killed Iran’s most powerful general.

Carrying signs with messages including “No Iran war” and “End colonial occupation,” the crowd — mostly college age, but also including the middle aged, seniors and children — took a roundabout path from Graceada Park to Tenth Street Plaza. The marchers went northeast on L Street, southwest on Ninth past the bus depot, then northeast on I before turning onto 10th and ending at the plaza.

Modesto’s downtown ice skating rink getting new owner, staying in business

It looks like Modesto On Ice — the popular ice skating rink that has drawn more than 230,000 people to downtown since its first season in 2015 — will not close.

The owners have lined up a buyer to continue operating the rink that has been a boon for downtown and offers family friendly fun.

Turlock husband and wife Dave and Kathy Halsey are in the process of buying Modesto On Ice and expect the purchase will be completed after the current season ends Jan. 20.

Turlock’s Johnson earns football honor; Modesto Christian boys open league play

Turlock High’s Everett Johnson was named Lineman of the Year by the Sacramento Valley Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.

Thirteen Stanislaus District football players were among those named to the first team or honorable mention by a committee of high school coaches representing the north and south regions — as well as small, medium and large schools — that make up the Sac-Joaquin Section.

Last month, Johnson signed a national letter of intent to play for the University of California.

The 6-foot-7, 312-pound Johnson will graduate Turlock and enroll at Cal on Jan. 16.

Magnitude 4 earthquake near Oxnard shakes up L.A. and Ventura counties

A magnitude 4 earthquake that ruptured in the Pacific Ocean sent weak shaking into Ventura County and across the Westside, San Fernando Valley and South Bay areas of Los Angeles County.

The earthquake hit at 2:13 a.m. Thursday about 19 miles south of Oxnard in Ventura County and about 15 miles southwest of Naval Base Ventura County at Point Mugu.

Malibu’s Point Dume is about 25 miles northeast of the epicenter, and Santa Monica is about 40 miles east of the earthquake’s origin. Downtown L.A. is almost 55 miles away from the epicenter.

Suspect crashes stolen pickup truck at Modesto intersection, injuring woman and 3-year-old

MODESTO, Calif. (KTXL) — A suspect crashed a stolen pickup truck into a woman’s car Tuesday in Modesto, injuring her and the child who was with her.

Around 9:30 a.m., Stanislaus County sheriff’s deputies went to the area of South Carpenter Road and California Avenue to investigate reports of a Toyota Tacoma that had been stolen from a home, according to police.

The Modesto Police Department says deputies spotted the Tacoma but lost sight of it until Modesto officers saw it just before 10 a.m. A man behind the wheel was driving recklessly in the area of Paradise Road and Yosemite Avenue.

With many thanks to Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District and its firefighters for many years of dedicated service, the City of Oakdale and Oakdale Fire Protection District entered a new era on Monday, July 1. The ceremonial ‘passing of the key’ was made to Modesto Fire Chief Alan Ernst, as the new contract for fire services took effect. Modesto Fire is now serving Oakdale city proper and the rural area of Oakdale Fire Protection District, including Knights Ferry and Valley Home.

Riverside County Gas Prices Dropping

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Riverside County dropped four-tenths of a cent Sunday to $3.506.

The average price is 2.4 cents lower than one week ago and 25.6 cents lower than one month ago, but 23.1 cents higher than one year ago, according to figures from the AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

It dropped 50.7 cents during a 51-day streak of falling prices that ended on Christmas Day, which brought the average price to its lowest amount
since Aug. 30.

Heavy rains to remain off Southern California coast

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Another cold storm was headed to San Diego County late tonight and through Monday night, but heavy rain will remain offshore, and some light rain and mountain snow is possible on Monday, forecasters say.

A winter storm warning was likely to be discontinued later Sunday, the National Weather Service in San Diego said in a release issued at 9:36 a.m. “The models are beginning to gel regarding the track of the system dropping south off the coast,” the weather service said.

So long, farewell: The major Modesto, valley business and restaurant closings of 2019

The end of the year — let alone an entire decade — always comes with a little sadness.

This year saw many longtime local businesses say goodbye for good, and national stalwarts shut down their large big box stores.

The so-called “retail apocalypse” was felt in the Central Valley as some well-known national chains faced bankruptcy. Other long-running businesses said farewell. A look at what left us in 2019.

BUSINESS CLOSURES

Sears: The iconic American company closed its Modesto location in Vintage Faire Mall the first week of January 2019. Sears had had a store in Modesto for 80 years, first in downtown and then at the north Modesto mall when it opened in 1977. The national chain’s bankruptcy forced the Modesto outlet to close. But, good news, its two-story anchor space at Vintage Faire is being taken over by a Dave & Buster’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods.
