Stanislaus State to cancels face-to-face classes; 2 more cases in San Joaquin County

Stanislaus State University on Thursday announced it will cancel face-to-face classes to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, which has prompted schools and organizations across the county to take precautions.

Classes can keep meeting on the Turlock and Stockton campuses until next Wednesday, university officials said, and professors will be given two days to prepare for online instruction before spring break begins on March 23.

All Stanislaus State, classes must be taught online by April 2, officials said, so the university will provide students laptops and Wi-Fi hotspots upon request.

California’s coronavirus death toll rises to 4

The death toll from the coronavirus outbreak in California rose to 4 after the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic over the virus.

Los Angeles County public health officials announced the state’s latest death related to the virus on Wednesday. The case marks the first death reported in LA County.

A woman over the age of 60 died after contracting COVID-19, health officials said. The woman, who has not been publically identified, was visiting friends and had underlying health conditions.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her family and her friends and we’re really sorry to be making this announcement today,” Los Angeles County Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer told reporters Wednesday.

Two Stanislaus County residents test positive for coronavirus

The coronavirus has reached Stanislaus County, with health officials announcing that two men in the county have tested positive for COVID-19.

On Wednesday, the Stanislaus County Public Health received confirmation that two adult male residents of the county have tested positive for the novel coronavirus by the California Department of Public Health. These tests will be confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

One person was a passenger on the Grand Princess Cruise to Mexico and one has no history of travel to a country with known community transmission and no known contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case.

Turlock residents Lynne and Forester Wescott have been kickboxing enthusiasts for years, from their time living in Southern California as newlyweds to moments spent in Texas where they helped grow a community for the sport from the ground up.

When they returned to Turlock a few years ago to be closer to family, they knew the town’s citizens could use a space where they, too, could take out their frustrations on a punching bag — all while getting a great workout in.

Stanislaus County remains free of coronavirus as disease spreads across state

Craig Wright is a silver-lining kind of man and as such is choosing to look on the bright side of his current situation.

Wright and his wife Marcy, both Turlock residents, were passengers on the Grand Princess cruise ship that was kept from coming to port for several days after 21 people tested positive for the coronavirus. On Monday, the ship was able to dock at the Port of Oakland and the Wrights began a 14-day quarantine at Travis Air Force Base.

A drone buzzed around like a bee about 50 feet away from Rex Lawson’s balcony.

He watched a convoy of ambulances and vans pull up below. Workers in protective suits moved about, while what appeared to be news helicopters hovered overhead.

“I have to comb my hair so I’ll look good on TV,” Mr. Lawson, 86, a retired United Airlines pilot, joked. He marveled at the “tremendous amount of logistics” at work around him.

Northern California’s largest school district cancels classes amid coronavirus fears

The largest school district in Northern California, the Elk Grove Unified School District, canceled classes and sports games through Friday after a family associated with the Elk Grove Unified School District was exposed to the new coronavirus and placed on quarantine to see if they were infected with coronavirus and would get sick.

All school activities were also canceled, though officials stressed there were no confirmed cases linked to the school.

The move comes as schools across California are responding to coronavirus.

The old two-story Graham-Rice Furniture building at 1511 J St., home to the Antique Emporium for two decades but sitting empty since December 2015, has been whipped into shape to now help people get and stay fit.

Its new tenant is the Tru-Fitness personal training studio, which will have a soft opening within a couple of weeks and a grand opening April 4, owner/trainer Jake Keidel said Wednesday.

Keidel, 31, grew up in Ceres, has been a personal trainer for 10 years and opened Tru-Fitness in 2014. He’s had much smaller locations in Modesto and Turlock — just 1,200 square feet when he first started — and right now operates what he calls his boutique training studio in a space in the Shops at Lincoln School shopping center on H Street.

Stanislaus County opens ‘books for keeps’ library in lobby of Hackett Road facility

Two-year-old Aiden Jones from Turlock wasn’t interested in the county leaders’ speeches at The Book Club Opening Day on Wednesday.

Instead, he was enthralled with all the books in the new children’s library in the lobby of the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency on Hackett Road.

The goal of the library is to put a book in the hands of every child who visits county facilities. Parents and caregivers can read the books to their children while waiting for an appointment, and then they may take the books home.
