Glasses 2 Classes coming to local schools

Legacy Health Endowment (LHE) is launching a vision care pilot program for public school students. Students in five school districts in Stanislaus and Merced counties will have access to free eye care this spring, thanks to a partnership between LHE and a company that organizes mobile eye clinics all across the country.

The program is known as Glasses 2 Classes. It offers free eye screening and same-day glasses for up to 200 students per district. The Optical Academy of New Jersey runs it. Turlock-based LHE is underwriting the cost of the clinics.

20-year-old Stanislaus County woman reported missing for weeks, mysterious texts received

 A Patterson woman who has been missing for over two weeks has yet to be found, according to the State of California Department of Justice and Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department.

20-year-old Breanna Marie Taylor was reportedly last seen on Feb. 23 and listed as missing on the same day. She is described as having black hair with red undertones, being 5’5 feet tall and weighing 110 pounds, according to the missing person report . Taylor was also reported to have a flower tattoo on the left side of her chest and a nose ring in her right nostril.

Stanislaus mosquito fair will offer family activities, information on preventing disease

Mosquitoes will be the main attraction at a family-friendly event in Turlock.

The Turlock Mosquito Abatement District plans an open house March 23 with activities and information on the pesky insects and how to protect the public against mosquito-borne diseases. The event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

 A pedestrian died early Thursday morning after being hit by a pickup truck on Highway 33 in Stanislaus County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, it happened just before 5 a.m. on Highway 33, north of McCracken Road.

Fruit Yard season lineup grows with third popular singer announced. See who, when

The performers keep on coming to The Fruit Yard Amphitheater in Modesto.

A third show has been added to the venue’s 2024 lineup, according to its website.

Country singer Jake Owen will perform at 6:30 p.m. May 19 at the venue near Waterford. Tickets, $50-$120, are on sale now.

Young, single Patterson mom has been missing for nearly two weeks. Family asks for help

A 20-year-old Patterson woman reported missing nearly two weeks has yet to be found, according to her family and the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Station.

Breanna Marie Taylor was last seen Feb. 23 at her apartment in Patterson. The next day, an “unverified number” texted her family saying that Breanna was involved in a stabbing and was hurt. Local hospitals were called, but Taylor was not located, read a Stanislaus County Crime Stoppers missing person flier.

Special needs prom magical night for local students

Prom is a special event for many high school students, but for the 200 individuals who will be attending the Society for Handicapped Children and Adults' 3rd annual Special Needs Prom, it is close to magical.

The magic will start with the theme, "Flying to Neverland," but it doesn't end there. Thanks to community sponsors, the prom attendees will be outfitted in evening wear, have their hair and make-up done by professional stylists, before being treated to a sit-down dinner. Then the real fun begins — dancing through the night.

Labaco wins area speech contest

Kylee Labaco, a Whitmore Charter High School junior, was declared the winner of the Area 12 Rotary Speech Contest held Feb. 26 at the Ceres Unified School District board room.

Labaco competed against first-place finishers in contests at the Turlock and Modesto club levels. The first-place finish came with a $175 prize.

Also competing was Turlock High School senior Nienebra Varani who claimed second place and won a $125 prize for her passionate speech.

Man Arrested On Warrant After Reportedly Urinating Inside Denny’s

At about 9:47pm Friday, Turlock Police responded to a disturbance in progress at Denny’s in the 1900 block of Lander Avenue.

The caller reported that Jorge Perez, 58, of Turlock, had come into the business, urinated on the floor, and tried to hit the manager before fleeing southbound Lander Avenue on foot.
