San Francisco Giants, father-son duo from Turlock enter MLB Draft with a chance at history

in Sports

Twenty seven years after the San Francisco Giants selected Turlock, Calif. native Steve Soderstrom with the sixth overall pick in the MLB Draft, another Turlock product is expected to be in the mix when the team is on the clock in Wednesday’s first round.

Soderstrom, who appeared in three games for the Giants during the 1996 season, can vouch for the 18-year-old catching prospect’s talents.

It’s his son, Tyler.

Only nine father-son duos have been taken in the first round of the MLB Draft and none were chosen by the same team. With the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft, the Giants and the Soderstrom family can make history.

“It would be super special,” Tyler said. “It’s been my dream to play in the major leagues since I found out my dad played professional baseball. My dad is my mentor.”

County Holding At Just Under 30 COVID Deaths

in Health

The latest figures from Stanislaus County – as of 4:45 p.m. on Monday, June 1 – showed there were 750 positive cases of coronavirus in the county with 29 total deaths reported as a result. There have also been 594 recovered cases and 13,250 negative tests.

Stanislaus County Health Services Agency testing numbers include those reported through the State infectious disease reporting system. The numbers do not necessarily include those routed through a commercial laboratory. All positive cases must be reported to Public Health.

In addition to the three testing sites coordinated by Stanislaus County, testing is still available through local health care providers and independent labs such as Quest and LabCorp. OptumServe in office testing is available in Patterson and Keyes; Project Baseline by Verily: Drive-Through Testing is offered in Salida.

Stanislaus County declares state of emergency following George Floyd protests

in People

STANISLAUS COUNTY, Calif. — Officials in Stanislaus County declared a state of emergency in response to the George Floyd protests throughout the area.

The move will give the county access to federal and state funding for law enforcement efforts.

“While we expect to see additional peaceful demonstrations as we have seen throughout this week, we do not expect demonstration to turn to violence unless instigated by outside influencers,” said Sheriff Jeff Dirkse. “This proclamation is primarily an administrative tool for the county to access state resources as well as activate the State Emergency Services Act, which helps to facilitate coordinated response throughout the County if needed.”

The declaration comes as a George Floyd protest in Oakdale turned "unpeaceful," according to local police. Earlier in the day, the Oakdale Police Department's chief had met and spoke with some of the protesters.

In January, the Turlock Community Priorities Advisory Committee was created to look at policy-level changes and priorities over the next one to five years that could stabilize the General Fund, identify priorities for services and service standards to guide the City Council in making near-term reductions or deferrals of City services and provide guidance on potential new revenue sources.

The group was led by Legacy Health Foundation CEO Jeffrey Lewis and made up of a group of business owners and leaders, financial experts, representatives from the Turlock Unified School District and Stanislaus State and at-large community members with at least one from each Council district chosen by former Interim City Manager Michael Cooke.
