Local unemployment rates bounce back in July

For the first time in 2023, both Stanislaus and Merced counties saw their unemployment rates drop in the same month.

According to the latest data from the State of California Employment Development Department (EDD), Stanislaus County’s unemployment rate dropped from 6.8 percent in June to 6.5 percent in July, adding roughly 800 jobs. Similarly, Merced County’s unemployment went from 9.4 percent in June to 8.6 percent in July, adding 900 jobs.

Last week, we got a total of 9 safety incidents from Turlock. The incidents varied in nature with theft being the most common, accounting for 3 of the incidents. Arrests and assaults were next, each making up 2 of the incidents. The remaining two incidents were classified as 'Other' and 'Vandalism'. These incidents were spread throughout the week, with no specific patterns in their occurrence.

In Stanislaus County, the unemployment rose slightly from 6.2% in April to 6.4% in May, representing approximately 15,600 individuals.
