Firefighters from a Stanislaus County strike team had left one massive wildfire and were headed to another Monday afternoon when they saw the fiery crash of a jet aircraft that smashed into trees as it was trying to land at the Truckee Tahoe Airport.
The five-engine strike team was on its way to Chico to join the firefighters at the Dixie Fire after spending a week helping fight the Tamarack Fire when the jet crashed about 1:20 p.m. The team was a mile or so away from when the jet crashed, said Tim Tietjen, the Modesto Fire Department’s division chief and the strike team leader.

TURLOCK (CBS13) — The Turlock Fire Department is battling a cluster of coronavirus infections.

The department’s four stations will continue operating, staffing shifts with firefighter overtime.
“We do have protocols in place to keep the stations isolated with the exception of emergency calls. But we have a duty to the city to respond to all emergencies,” Chief Carlson said.

Firefighter Dies Battling Wildfire Sparked by Gender Reveal
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — A firefighter died battling a wildfire in California that officials said was sparked by a device used to reveal a baby’s gender.
The death happened Thursday in the San Bernardino National Forest as crews battled the El Dorado Fire, the U.S. Forest Service said in a statement.
The fire erupted earlier this month from a smoke-generating pyrotechnic device used by a couple to reveal their baby’s gender, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire, said.
The name of the firefighter was being withheld until family members are notified. The cause of the death was under investigation.

Firefighters from Across the United States Came to Help During Kincade Fire
While Sonoma County and local Cal Fire fire agencies were first to the Kincade fire when it erupted two weeks ago in remote, rugged land atop the Mayacamas Mountains, nearly 500 more agencies headed this way to help.
The vast majority of the 506 agencies came from around California but 159 came from outside the state, including 11 from Montana, 16 from Colorado, three from South Dakota and two from Nebraska, according to a Cal Fire list.
At its peak, 5,245 firefighters were battling the blaze, which has burned almost 78,000 acres since it started on Oct. 23. As of Wednesday, it is 88 percent contained. Full containment is expected on Thursday.
The most out-of-state aid came from Oregon, where firefighters from 54 agencies headed south to help in Sonoma County.

Turlock Fire Department Service Still Suffering from Budget Cuts, Staffing Shortage
TURLOCK, Calif — It has been four months since the Turlock Fire Department took a $1.1 million budget cut. Since then, they have faced a major staffing shortage and they’ve had to take one of their four fire engines out of service more than 60% of the time.
“I live in close proximity to a fire department… and know that [sometimes] I don’t have that protection, nor do any of my neighbors. It’s not comforting,” Amy Boylan-Mendes, a neighbor said.
Boylan-Mendes said she has lived next to the fire station for more than 25 years. She said when she wales up every morning, she checks to see if a white SUV is parked outside of that fire station. If it’s there, that means the closest fire engine to her house has been taken out of service for the day.
