County seeing progress in COVID-19 fight

Vaccination efforts in Stanislaus County are growing and COVID-19 cases are decreasing, giving some room to hope that the area will be able to move into a less restrictive tier by mid-March.

“This is the first good news we’ve had in a while,” said Stanislaus County Supervisor Vito Chiesa after being briefed on the current COVID-19 status at Tuesday’s meeting.

As of Monday, Stanislaus County expanded the vaccination efforts to Phase 1B, which is for people 50 years and older who work in education and childcare, emergency services and food and agriculture sectors.

For this week the County was allocated about 9,000 vaccines, up from the 5,800 from the previous week.

The County also is seeing COVID-19 cases drop recently. Since Feb. 8, Stanislaus County has seen cases dropping at a small but steady rate, according to the Stanislaus County Health Services Agency data.

Coronavirus update, Feb. 4: Stanislaus hospitals ease again. Vaccines in Oakdale

Another six Stanislaus County residents have died of COVID-19, raising the total to 848 as of Wednesday.

The county Health Services Agency added 284 new cases, for a total of 46,749. Stanislaus also has 396,588 negative test results and 43,434 people who are presumed recovered from the virus.

The county's five hospitals had 218 confirmed COVID-19 patients Wednesday, down from 222 on Tuesday and continuing a steady decline from well over 300 a month ago. Available ICU beds for adults rose to seven from five.

The seven-day rolling positivity rate was 11.36%, down from 13.25%. The 14-day rate was 13.3%, down from 13.78%.

Over the last seven days, Stanislaus County's infection rate per 100,000 residents ranks 13st highest among the state's 58 counties and rate of death is 16th, according to the Los Angeles Times COVID-19 tracker. Its overall death rate per 100,000 residents remains fourth in the state. Its infection rate per 100,000 residents is 16th.

Coronavirus update, Jan. 13: Stanislaus County on brink of 700 deaths, 40,000 cases

Stanislaus County reported another 13 deaths to the virus Tuesday, raising the total to 699 residents since last April.

The county also added 493 positive tests and had a notable increase in the number of hospital patients, the Health Services Agency said.

January already has brought 83 deaths, about a third of the way into the month. It is on a pace to far surpass December's 188 deaths, the most so far for any month in the pandemic. Of the 58 counties in California, Stanislaus has the ninth highest rate of deaths in the last seven days, according to the Los Angeles Times tracker. Tuolumne County which has 36 overall deaths, has the highest rate in the last week.

Nearly 600 deaths reported statewide following holiday weekend | COVID-19 updates for Northern California

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Gov. Gavin Newsom will provide an update on the state’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic at noon on Monday, Jan. 4, 2021.

The state recorded 567 additional deaths over the weekend following the New Year's holiday. 

Over the weekend, it was announced that the Greater Sacramento Region will continue to stay in the state's stay-at-home order due to low ICU capacity. The region's four-week projected ICU capacity does not meet the 15% threshold to end the order.

The silver lining of the difficult times that overshadow the year 2020 was the spirit of giving that sprang forth from community members young and old who did their best to make difficult times just a little bit easier for their neighbors.

Turlock residents have always been known for their generosity, but the overwhelming impacts of the coronavirus pandemic spurred many to share their time, talents and resources in meaningful ways from church groups shopping for shut-ins to a senior citizen knitting hats and blankets for newborn babies.

Below are a few of the ordinary citizens who made extraordinary efforts to help others in 2020:

— New Life Christian Center’s high school ministry group, comprised of junior and senior students Brooke Rose, Emma Borrelli, Lilly Leonard, Grace Gonzales, Kayla Reese and Bella Pace, took it upon themselves to go grocery shopping for the elderly and others who may not be able to make it to the store due to the impact of COVID-19.

Coronavirus update, Dec. 29: Stanislaus deaths reach 586. Area ICUs are near capacity

Dec. 29—Latest facts on COVID-19 in Modesto area

The overall number of COVID-19 patients declined Monday in Stanislaus County hospitals, but intensive-care units were near capacity.

The county's five hospitals had 333 confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Monday, down from 348 on Sunday. That is about 100 more than the peak of the summer surge.

There were just two remaining staffed adult ICU beds available, down from six the day before.

Eight more residents have died, for a total of 586 since the first in April, the county Health Services Agency said. The 158 COVID-related deaths in December surpasses the single-month high since the start of the pandemic. In August, 152 people succumbed.

A stay-at-home order started Dec. 6 because of tight ICU space for adults in Stanislaus and 11 other counties in the San Joaquin Valley Region. It was triggered when available beds fell below 15% of the total. Monday was the 11th straight day at zero.

U.S. COVID-19 Cases Hit 19-Million Mark

The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States has now surpassed 19 million, according to Johns Hopkins University data. 

The country has marked the 19th million cases just six days after the country recorded 18 million cases. The nation's COVID-19 cases have more than doubled in less than two months, the Associated Press reported. 

Deaths associated with the disease have also increased in the country. It now totals more than 332,000 recorded deaths, which is more than one death for every 1,000 Americans.

The U.S. accounts for about four percent of the world's population. COVID-19 cases account for 24 percent of its total population and 19 percent for its COVID-19 deaths.

Stanislaus County reels from coronavirus deaths. Hospitalizations soar to new high.

Stanislaus County is reporting eight coronavirus deaths per day, as local hospitals are filled with sick patients and many residents ignore a stay-home order in the days leading up to Christmas.

An update Monday afternoon recorded 10 new deaths, and COVID hospitalizations soared to 363 after a brief dip to 315 hospitalizations on Sunday.

In the past seven days, 55 people have died from COVID-19 in Stanislaus County, which has the third highest COVID-19 mortality rate among California counties. Monday’s updated count pushed the county’s pandemic death toll to 533.

Stanislaus County COVID-19 death rates soar, cases surging

TURLOCK, Calif. — In line in his pickup at a new pop-up testing site at Stanislaus State University in Turlock, Cody Brown said he may have been exposed to COVID-19.

His job at a tractor supply company told him to get tested.

"So I called in sick because I had a fever the other night and they said 'Oh let's schedule a test,'" Brown said.

Married with two young kids, his wife tested positive before Thanksgiving. He once believed COVID was fake, but no longer.

"From seeing my wife, she said she had the flu before, but she said the headaches were pretty crazy," Brown said.

The long line of about two dozen cars on a campus parking lot was a grim reminder of the surge in Stanislaus County.

Turlock nursing facility sees 4th highest COVID resident deaths in CA, according to state data

TURLOCK, Calif. —

Forty residents are currently sick with COVID-19 at Turlock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and 40 residents have died since the pandemic started, according to the California Department of Public Health.

The Turlock facility has had more residents die of the novel coronavirus than any other another nursing facility in the area, and the fourth most in the state, according to CDPH data.

The facility reported different statistics saying 28 residents have died.

“On behalf of our entire community, we join these families in mourning the loss of their loved ones to this insidious virus,” said a message posted on the facility’s website.

The facility and state's statistics are most closely aligned when it comes to the total number of residents who have tested positive for COVID-19 since the pandemic started. Both reported at least 155 residents have tested positive for the virus. The facility added that half of the residents have recovered.
