in Places & Recreation

A nature preserve park in California’s Santa Clara County has been temporarily closed after a 6-year-old girl was bitten in the leg by what is believed to be a mountain lion on Sunday morning. The child’s injuries were minor. An investigation has been launched to locate and confirm the identity of the animal, which is thought to be an adult male lion, park authorities confirmed.

The incident took place at the Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve near the city of Cupertino around 9:45 a.m. (local time) while the girl was on a walking trail with her family. Her father managed to scare away the animal, which reportedly weighed about 100 pounds, just after it bit the girl in the calf.

California’s most restless wolf has been found dead, spurring a state investigation into her fate.

The body of young female gray wolf OR-54, called “a traveling maniac” by one expert, was discovered in Shasta County on Wednesday, according to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The state did not say whether she was killed or died naturally. It is the second wolf death in California, following the shooting of a young male wolf in rural Modoc County in December, 2, 2018.

Lawsuit Challenges Federal Predator Control Program in Northern California Counties

in Agriculture

Three environmental groups filed a lawsuit Tuesday in federal court seeking to halt part of a controversial government program that kills predators, including coyotes, bears and mountain lions, in ways that the groups allege are cruel, outdated and ineffective.

The lawsuit challenges a U.S. Department of Agriculture program called Wildlife Services that uses leg-hold traps, strangulation snares, poisons and guns to kill animals at taxpayer expense, mostly to benefit livestock operations.

In 2018, the program killed nearly 1.5 million animals nationwide, including 26,441 in California, according to USDA records.

The statewide toll included 3,826 coyotes, 859 beavers, 170 foxes, 105 black bears and 83 mountain lions along with 5,675 birds.

San Jose Cat Saves Woman from a Possible Drug Addiction

in Health

Time for more of your wonderful stories, some about how you came to have your pet, and all about how much having a pet adds to life.

DEAR JOAN: About 4 years ago, I had a knee replacement. I was sent home after just three days with a big bottle of pain pills.

I took them for 3½ weeks and then decided it was time to stop so I could start driving.  That night, I went to bed and couldn’t sleep. I had pain and was jittery. I was thinking about getting another one of those pain pills when my kitty, Bialy, came and sat on my chest.

He’d never done that before (although he does now since he lost his brother). I couldn’t bring myself to get up to get any medication with him being so cuddly. He did the same the next night and by that time, I had no more need for pain killers.

I still tell people that Bialy saved me from a lifetime of addiction.
