California got federal funding for electric buses. Is your town on the list?

Your bus could be electric in the near future, thanks to a couple of federal funds.

Some transit and school buses in California are already electric. The California Air Resources Board, which sets state policy on air pollution, mandated in 2018 that California transit bus fleets be zero emission by 2040. All bus purchases in 2029 and after must be battery electric or fuel cell electric, per the mandate.

Federal funds can help in that endeavor. The Federal Transit Authority, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, announced their allocations for buses from the 2021 fiscal year. More than a dozen California transit agencies would get federal funding to replace old public transit buses:

Transdev begins operations of newly merged The S service

Transdev began operations for Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority’s newly merged services, The S, on Jan. 1, 2022.

The S is the brand of the main provider of local and regional public transit in Stanislaus County, Calif., following the consolidation of Modesto Area Express (operated by the city of Modesto) and Stanislaus Regional Transit (operated by Stanislaus County) into Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority.

Transdev is now operating 100 percent of The S services. This includes the operations and management of 123 vehicles and 190 employees across its multi-modal offerings incorporating their fixed route, commuter, Dial-A-Ride, ADA paratransit and shuttle services.

“We are really proud to have been selected to partner with the Authority to complete the consolidation and operation of these services for Stanislaus County,” said Ibrahima Toure, Transdev’s regional vice president for its southwest region. “As a national mobility solutions provider, Transdev is able to bring innovative operations tools to help improve efficiency for the system and focus on consistent, positive customer experiences for the passengers.”

Turlock Transit now offering rides to Amtrak station

Turlock Transit began offering on-demand shuttles to the Amtrak station in Denair this week as part of a new service meant to improve residents’ connectivity to rail services.

The new, demand-response service for travelers arriving at and departing from the Turlock-Denair Amtrak Station began running on Monday, transporting riders to or from any location in Turlock or Denair for $2.50 each way. Riders can call and request a pick-up from their location in either town; the Turlock Transit bus will then pick riders up from their home and transport them to the station on Santa Fe Avenue. 

“We are very pleased to have Turlock Transit as a partner in connecting passengers to and from Turlock, Denair and CSU Stanislaus,” said Vito Chiesa, Stanislaus County Supervisor District 2 and former Chairperson for the San Joaquin Joint Powers Authority. “Local transit operators provide critical first and last mile connections. Turlock Transit’s doorstep to station service will serve as a great model for local providers throughout the state.”

The latest addition to Turlock Transit’s offerings comes as the City takes steps to make public transit easier for residents. In September, the City Council voted to reduce transit fares ahead of a scheduled rate increase, benefitting a wide range of bus riders from students to seniors.

ACE train could be running in Turlock by 2025

The latest expansion of the Altamont Corridor Express, which includes a new train station in Turlock, could be running in the next few years after the project received an important approval last week. 

The San Joaquin Regional Rail Commission on Friday approved the final environmental impact report for the segment stretching from Turlock to Merced. Earlier this fall, the commission approved stations in Manteca, Ripon, Modesto and Ceres, for which design work has already begun. The latest approval will allow design work for Turlock, Livingston and Merced stations to move forward, connecting residents to Silicon Valley and the Bay Area.

Turlock Transit installs air purification system on buses

Active air purification technology has been installed on all Turlock Transit buses. 

The equipment generates and distributes safe levels of naturally occurring hydroperoxides to actively and continually treat the air and surfaces. The system has been lab-tested and proven to eliminate nearly 99 percent of germs, microbes, viruses and bacteria from the air and on surfaces, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Transit agencies offer free rides in July

Turlock residents can take a free ride throughout the month of July on both Turlock Transit buses and Stanislaus Regional Transit Authority lines.

All rides on all fixed route buses will be free for passengers during July as part of a joint, free ride promotion. This includes MAX to BART Commuter Express, MAX to ACE Commuter Express, and StaRT’s BART Commuter bus services, but excludes ADA Paratransit, Medivan, and Dial-a-Ride services.

Funding for the joint, free ride promotion is made possible through a grant from the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) under the Low Carbon Transit Operations Program (LCTOP). The Stanislaus Council of Governments (StanCOG) is providing grant management assistance in supporting these activities.
