Letter: Support Measure D – Ambulance assessment

Measure D on your November ballot deserves your support. This Measure preserves public safety and ensures essential ambulance services (West Side Community Health Care District) within our communities.

I have always supported our ambulance service since its beginning; the men and women working for us are dedicated, caring, effective and accessible. And this is the only emergency service that will transport us to hospitals in Modesto, Turlock and other communities.

Governor Newsom signs CARE Court Into Law; Glenn County among the first cohort

With more than 100,000 people living on California Streets, Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation Wednesday enacting CARE Court to provide individuals with severe mental health and substance use disorders the care and services they need to get healthy.

“With overwhelming support from the Legislature and stakeholders across California, CARE Court will now become a reality in our state, offering hope and a new path forward for thousands of struggling Californians and empowering their loved ones to help,” said Governor Newsom.

Stanislaus County is rolling back response to COVID-19. Flu season could pack a punch

Stanislaus County public health officials are unwinding their response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as hospitals and the community are no longer seeing a severe disease impact from the virus.

Dr. Julie Vaishampayan, county public health officer, said the public health division will discontinue bed polling at hospitals and take other steps to return responsibility for testing and treatment of COVID-19 patients back to private healthcare providers.

Foundation launches plan to help Westside residents with insulin costs

The Emanuel Medical Center Health Foundation is launching a program for communities in Stanislaus and Merced counties to help lower the cost on insulin medication.

The program, the $2 Charitable Insulin Relief Plan is funded by the EMC Health Foundation and is a collaboration with TIN Rx, an independent pharmacy in Turlock. The plan covers the most-used insulin medications.

Davis residents can now view local COVID-19 rates, tracked via wastewater testing

in Community/Health

Davis residents, as well as residents in some other central valley communities, can now check local COVID-19 rates based on their city’s wastewater via the Healthy Central Valley Together (HCVT) program, a collaboration between UC Davis and UC Merced researchers. 

According to the HCVT website, the program currently tracks the spread of COVID-19 via wastewater from water treatment plants in the cities of Davis, Woodland, Winters, Esparto, Merced, Turlock, Modesto and Los Banos.

Local hospitals come together for Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive

Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock joined forces with Modesto’s Doctors Medical Center and Manteca’s Doctors Hospital to help local children and adults struggling with hunger.

As part of the Healthy Over Hunger Cereal Drive in early June, the final tallies show that the hospitals and community members donated over 15,000 servings of cereal and more than $3,700. The cereal and the funds will go directly towards Second Harvest of the Greater Valley, which is one of the largest food banks in the Central Valley.

West Nile detected in Turlock mosquito sample

The Stanislaus County Health Services Agency has confirmed that two mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus — one from the Turlock area and one from the east side of the county.

Three human cases of the virus have been identified in Stanislaus County. As of July 29, WNV has been detected in 23 California counties with the WNV activity confirmed in seven humans, 49 dead birds and 702 mosquito samples.
