Turlock High takes over downtown to celebrate homecoming

in Events/School

The only undefeated football team in Turlock High history was in attendance as the Bulldogs celebrated their 2021 homecoming parade. The 1970-1971 team excited the crowd as floats took over a shut down Main Street Friday afternoon.

“I want to thank everyone for coming and supporting our team on this festive day. Hopefully the team has their head game, and they can out victorious. Victory’s a sweet a thing,” said former Turlock High football player David Yonan.

Gospel Mission’s ‘Top Chef’ fundraiser returns

in Events/Food

Turlock residents are invited to taste — and critique — some of the best cuisine their favorite local food trucks have to offer, and all for a good cause.

Turlock Gospel Mission’s second annual Turlock Top Chef competition is set to be held later this month, bringing back a new tradition which started successfully in 2019, but was put on halt last year due to the pandemic. This time, instead of four of the city’s top culinary masters putting their knives to the test, four of the area’s most popular food trucks will face off while feeding the masses.

Stanislaus County Fair delivers on opening day

in Events

Corn dogs, cows and crowds made their way back to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds in Turlock on Friday for opening day of the fair’s Summer of Fun — a different approach to one of the area’s most popular events after a year of closures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

While this year’s Stanislaus County Fair is taking place without rides or exhibits, CEO Matt Cranford said the organization crammed as much fun as they could into three weekends featuring favorite fair foods, pop-up shops, FoodMaxx Arena events and livestock shows. After COVID restrictions kept Cranford and company guessing for months, they were finally able to begin planning once guidelines were relaxed and had just six weeks to do so, he said.

No fireworks, parade in Turlock for Independence Day

in Events/Local Roundup

As staffing woes and the pandemic continue to affect both the City of Turlock as well as local businesses, there will be no 4th of July fireworks show or downtown parade yet again this year.

While COVID-19 put a stop to the Annual 4th of July Parade and Car Show last summer, event sponsor Patrick Jensen of Paul’s Glass Co. said the event just wasn’t possible again this year as his staff dwindles in the midst of an employment shortage. Jensen typically partners with the Turlock Downtown Property Owners Association in order to host the downtown parade, but the organization is also shorthanded and currently without a leader as it looks to hire a new director.

After a successful inaugural event in 2019, the San Joaquin Valley Portuguese Festival will return to Turlock this summer following a year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The Carlos Vieira Foundation hosted the first SJVPF in April 2019 and it was a huge success, with nearly 15,000 community members from Turlock and beyond making their way out to the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds to enjoy Portuguese food, dancing, music and entertainment. The festival not only allows people of all backgrounds to discover what Portuguese culture has to offer, but also raises money for the CVF’s Race for Autism campaign in order to help Central Valley families who have children living with autism.
