Rev up for a Return of Modesto’s Monthlong Summer Celebration. When, Where to Be

in Event News/Arts & Entertainment

Modesto’s annual summer celebration gets back to where it belongs this year.

Graffiti Summer returns to June with a month of events planned for car lovers and fans of Modesto native George Lucas’ film homage to his hometown teen years, 1973’s “American Graffiti.”

Two stars from the film are set to appear at separate events.

Last year’s events were held in August, pushed because of the pandemic, which canceled completely the 2020 celebration.

The move to August didn’t appear to deter from the event, according to Todd Aaronson, CEO of the Modesto Convention & Visitors Bureau, which markets the summer celebration.

in Places & Recreation/Arts & Entertainment

California wildflower season might be that rare Instagram trend that’s actually worth the hype. Since the #superbloom earned its hashtag, the influx of newcomers has included — well, pretty much everyone. It can get crowded, but an hour or two frolicking in a colorful field full of beautiful flowers might be better than medicine. If it’s good enough for Tom Petty, it’s good enough for me.

While not every year yields a full-on super bloom, this renewed interest in flowers as a photo-op has put state parks back on the map as destination spots — at least for a few months every year. Whether you’re pure of heart or an influencer in the making, we don’t judge. Here’s a guide to everywhere you can see some seriously beautiful blooms in California this year, from Death Valley to Mount Diablo.

Disney Says Character Hugs and Other Interactions Will Return Soon at US Sites

in Arts & Entertainment

(CNN) — Of the many safety measures that Disney Parks had to set up to operate during the Covid-19 pandemic, requiring guests to keep a six-foot distance from the costumed characters must have been one of the hardest. At least emotionally.

For kids (or kids at heart), running into the waiting arms of Mickey Mouse and other beloved characters had been such an impulsive and quintessential part of the experience. Hanging back can be tough.

But finally, hugs are back on the horizon at US Disney properties.

As early as April 18, Disney “will start reintroducing traditional character greetings at Disneyland (in California) and Walt Disney World Resorts, as well as aboard Disney Cruise Line and at Aulani Resort in Hawaii,” according to a new post on Thursday on the official Disney Parks blog.

Two Whales Give Tour Thrilling Encounter Off California Coast

in Arts & Entertainment

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KSWB) – Two giant gray whales thrilled a tour group with their up-close antics off the coast of Southern California last week, bobbing, rolling, and even flashing their tails within a few feet of the small raft.

Experts call the behavior “mugging,” and it displays the kind of gentle curiosity that has earned the species the nickname “friendly whales.” The length and proximity of the encounter, which happened Thursday evening off the coast of Newport Beach, excited even veterans at the whale watching company that organized the tour.
