California County Shuts Down Fifth of Water Wells Over PFAS (2)

California wants to slash the allowable levels in drinking water for two “forever chemical” compounds, immediately prompting agencies supplying water to 2.5 million residents in Orange County to remove a fifth of their wells from service.

The State Water Resources Control board Thursday said it planned to dramatically lower its response levels for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), though actual drinking water standards are still years away.

The response levels require water suppliers to install treatment, and remove wells from service if they exceed the thresholds. Notifying customers is required if districts plan to keep wells in service without treatment for an extended period.

Cal State Long Beach Professor Rashida Crutchfield began focusing on homelessness and food insecurity among college students more than a decade ago.

Back then, she worked at Covenant House of California, a non-profit in Hollywood that provides housing and other support to homeless young adults. Now, Crutchfield is a leading researcher on the lack of basic needs among students enrolled in higher education.

International visitor with measles infects 4 L.A. County residents

Los Angeles County Department of Public Health officials Wednesday confirmed measles cases in four residents after an unimmunized international traveler visited the area.

“For those who are not protected, measles is a highly contagious and potentially severe disease that initially causes fever, cough, red, watery eyes and, finally, a rash,” Los Angeles County Health Officer Dr. Muntu Davis said in a statement.

Those at risk should check their immunization records and contact a healthcare provider about potential exposure if not protected. Officials recommend watching for a rash or fever, and if symptoms develop, staying home and calling a healthcare provider.

Hailed as the biggest academic event for local high schools, the decathlon is a two-day series of tests, speeches and interviews featuring this year’s theme, “In Sickness and In Health: An Exploration of Illness and Wellness.”

If you didn’t get your fill of Soarin’ Over California last summer you’ll get another chance to hang glide over Napa Valley, Monterey Bay and Redwood Creek when the classic version of the flight simulator ride returns to Disney California Adventure for another limited-time run.

Soarin’ Over California will return Feb. 28 to April 21 during the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival at the Anaheim theme park, according to Disney officials. An end date for Soarin’ Over California hasn’t been confirmed yet, Disney officials said.

Kindergartner tries to spread positivity through ‘joy box’ in his front yard

TURLOCK, Calif. (KTXL) – A California kindergartner aims to spread happiness – and plans to start in his family’s front yard.

“Get to write a note and then you get to put it in here. And we get the key, put it in, unlock it and take it out then the wish comes true,” said Levi Navarra. “It’s called the Joy Box.”

Six-year-old Levi said he believes that finding happiness is as easy as visiting the Joy Box, according to KTXL.

CALIFORNIA DEPUTIES CONFISCATE HUNDREDS OF GALLONS OF HOMEMADE ALCOHOL FROM INMATES WHO WERE ‘GOING BIG’ FOR THE SUPER BOWL

Correctional officers confiscated hundreds of gallons of homemade alcohol from inmates at a California jail ahead of a Super Bowl party they were allegedly planning.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said the “illegally made jail house alcohol” had been found during a search at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, California on Saturday.

Inmates at the jail hid had hundreds of gallons of the alcohol in garbage cans and other hideaway, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The sheriff’s office posted a picture of 25 deputies standing in front of several bags of the confiscated alcohol, which they said was made from fruit and juice, on Instagram.

The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus worldwide is now 14,557, most of which are in China, according to World Health Organization (WHO) data. The death toll has risen to at least 304. A 44-year-old man in the Philippines died of the virus on Saturday, making him the first reported death outside of China. All territories and provinces in China have now been impacted by the virus.

5:00 pm: Santa Clara County reports ninth US case of coronavirus

The ninth U.S. case of coronavirus was confirmed in Santa Clara County on Sunday. It’s the second case in the San Francisco Bay area. The case is in a woman who was recently in Wuhan, China, and visited the U.S. to see family on Jan 23, according to the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department.
