How does your garden grow?

During the pandemic, Turlock Unified School District noticed that gardens at the elementary schools were unused due to a lack of students and personnel to attend to them. This provided the opportunity for high school Agriculture interns and the TUSD Farm to work together in bringing those gardens back to life before students returned to campuses this fall. During this process, it was noted that four of the elementary sites in the Turlock district did not have access to gardens on their campuses.

“Turlock Unified School District strives to educate all students through an equity lens, including access to live learning labs. With support of district personnel and the school board, the TUSD Farm and interns began to focus on how to implement gardens for all elementary sites,” said Coordinator of Environmental Studies and Applied Horticulture Hail Bream.

Turlock’s Sargis seeking continued success for Sac Republic

Since signing his first professional soccer contract in early 2020, Turlock native Hayden Sargis has made a name for himself as a member of Sacramento Republic FC. Now, the 19-year-old is fighting through injury to continue that success as he returns to the pitch this weekend. 

Sargis picked up a soccer ball almost as soon as he could walk, starting at age four and advancing as far as the Olympic Development Program and the East Valley FC Earthquakes by age 13. Sargis became a member of the Republic FC Academy system at its inception in 2015 and became known as a reliable defender, notching 109 appearances, 92 starts and three goals in U.S. Development Academy action. 

His prowess on the pitch earned Sargis his first-ever contract, which he signed with Republic FC prior to the 2020 USL Championship season and viewed as a lifelong goal finally attained. Although currently playing as a USL team, Republic FC will make the move to MLS come 2022.

Stanislaus County announces new round of nonprofit grants

Stanislaus County is once again partnering with the Stanislaus Community Foundation to support local nonprofit organizations.

On Aug. 31, a total of $1 million in CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Funds was approved by the Board of Supervisors to assist critical nonprofit work with priority given to nonprofits that did not receive funding from the 2020 Nonprofit Support Grant Program, nonprofits that serve veterans and seniors and new Stanislaus County nonprofits. Organizations can apply for funding online starting Oct. 5.

Development continues to thrive in Turlock

While the pandemic may have put many things on halt over the past 19 months, one thing that didn’t stop in Turlock is the development and opening of new businesses in town.

Some businesses were lost in 2020, like Hometown Buffet, the downtown Dust Bowl taproom and In Shape on Geer Road, but the construction of new establishments has occurred on the regular since last March. Turlock celebrated the development of a brand-new Dutch Bros. Coffee shop, Sourdough & Co. and Domino’s Pizza near Stanislaus State, and the other side of town welcomed a Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen to the Turlock Town Center.

In one of the cities in Stanislaus County, about two-thirds of the eligible residents are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Turlock mental health center receives $1 million in federal grant funding

After being pinpointed for federal funding by Rep. Josh Harder and the House Appropriations Committee earlier this year, one Turlock nonprofit will soon be able to provide even more mental health services thanks to additional grant revenue announced by the Congressman’s office this week.

In May, Harder named First Behavioral Health Urgent Care Center in Turlock as one of 10 community projects the Congressman submitted to the Appropriations Committee for funding consideration. Harder requested about $300,000 so that the nonprofit organization could hire a Spanish-speaking behavioral health clinician and a Spanish-speaking administrative employee, as well as create a mental health publicity campaign to help raise awareness in underserved communities.

Teen driver flees collision with pedestrian

A teenager was behind the wheel in a collision that critically injured a man in Turlock on Thursday night.

The teenager initially fled the scene of the collision but subsequently went to the Turlock Police Department to speak with investigators, said department spokesman Sgt. Michael Parmley.

The collision happened at 10:53 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Lander Avenue and E. Glenwood Avenue.

California raw milk dairyman is nonplussed about recall and quarantine

Valley Milk Simply Bottled is the California raw milk that’s been quarantined and ordered recalled four times since 2019, most recently last week.

The Modesto Bee just paid a visit to the dairy, which is located six miles west of the City of Modesto. The local dairy newspaper reports finding dairyman Joe Bento “unfazed.”  

 “Even though we’re going through stuff like this, I still enjoy it,” Bento told the Bee.

When he says “stuff like this, “ Bento means the recent report by the California Department of Health about illegal levels of Campylobacter jejuni found by the state’s Department of Food and Agriculture in raw cow milk produced and bottled by his company.

Man pleads guilty to supplying Vallejo heroin dealers; feds say he was starting opium farm

SACRAMENTO — A Turlock man who was indicted after an undercover investigation into Vallejo heroin dealers brought the Drug Enforcement Administration to his door has pleaded guilty, court records show.

Arturo Castro-Zavaleta, 41, pleaded guilty last month to possession of one kilogram of heroin with intent to distribute, as well as a methamphetamine trafficking charge. In exchange, prosecutors have agreed to seek a low-end prison term at Castro-Zavaleta’s Nov. 11 sentencing hearing.
