Towering tree splits Turlock house. No one hurt, but three people displaced

The roof and walls of a Turlock home were no match for the enormous tree that fell into it during stormy weather Monday morning, “splitting it down the middle,” as a fire department report put it.

A little before 6:40 a.m., a fire engine crew was dispatched to the report of a tree on a house in the 1500 block of Hawkeye Avenue. Firefighters found a once-towering tree lying through the middle of the house.

California’s largest private giant sequoia stand saved from development

The long-awaited purchase of a vast grove of giant sequoias once targeted for homes and a ski resort has been completed by the San Francisco conservation group Save the Redwoods League, which plans to open trails and eventually make it a federal park.

The league raised $15.65 million to buy the 530-acre Alder Creek Grove, a picturesque hillside forest in Tulare County that includes the 3,000-year-old Stagg Tree — the fifth-largest tree in the world.

‘Scariest tree pathogen in the world’ spreading rapidly in California

Sudden Oak Death (SOD), a deadly disease for oak trees, is on the rise in California. According to a survey conducted by UC Berkeley scientists, the number of infected trees has almost doubled since 2018.

Matteo Garbelotto, the director of the UC Berkeley Forest Pathology and Mycology Laboratory, has been involved in conducting the survey of 14 California counties (stretching from Humboldt to Monterey) for the past 12 years. This year, two aspects of the results stood out to him.

"We found this year the most sharp increase ever in the number of trees affected," said Garbelotto. However, this was expected due to the wet winters we've had in California for the past two years — the spores spread faster with significant rainfall.
